I built this a little over 5 years ago and it's been in a storage/transport box, pretty much ever since. It did win "Amy's Pick" at the Hot Wheels Nationals in Dallas in 2004... It's made from an off brand Big Lots 1/18 diecast VW bug and Hot Wheels 1/18 scale motors from the VW Drag Truck, wheels/tires from a Hot Wheels Merc Woodie (Front) and '57 Chevy (Rear), they had vinyl redlines but they turned to kaka over the years... Lots of JB Weld and aluminum sheet went into transforming the body from standard Bug to an Evil Weevil replica. It's not really a Replica though as I took some minor liberties with the design.
The rear engine is mounted backwards in mine where it's mounted facing forward in the Hot Wheels. I thought my version made more sense. Mine also has single exit side pipes for the front engine exhaust rather than the Zoomies the Hot Wheels has. Not like mine looks any better but I felt if the rear engine uses a header like, single exit pipe, the front should as well. Lastly, mine has two seats where the Hot Wheels has only a single center seat. Why should the driver be the only one having fun?
The engines had the "toy like" plug wires replaced with some nicer wires but I left the rest un-detailed. I wanted it to look like something Mattel COULD have offered, not so much a "Model" but a mid grade die cast "Adult Collectible" sort of thing.
Paint is some kind of Duplicolor metallizer base coat silver with candy magenta. Vinyl pinstripe flames I designed and cut with my plotter. I'm getting ready to redo some parts for next years Hot Wheels Nationals in St. Louis. So the next time you see it, it'll be somewhat different paint/graphics...
Till next time!
