The Roach CoachDesigned by the master Ed Newton, ca. 1972, built by Newt himself (he was actually half-owner of this beast), Dan Woods and Jake Jacobs.(according to my knowledge, correct me if I'm wrong...) " A surrealistic cockroach on wheels" or " A kinetic sculpture" is how Newt describes it. I was always fascinated by this thing, I do not know exactly why, but it attracts me magical... And guys, I mean the vehicle and not the standing beauty in this picture, which is now more than 30 years older... ;D I only know of one, two pictures. Is there more of them?Where's it at and please, does anyone have details, what type of engine, suspension, interior, etc.? Has anyone already tried to build a model, or has even built one? Are there kits, resin casts? I would be very grateful for more infos and especially more images. Please help!

The article says Don Boeke has it and he is in Dayton, Ohio. Look him up. He may have other pictures of the "car".

I sent pics of the interior to Tim. Let me scan my book when I get home. I was going to build this a few years a go. The perfect candidate could be the raiders coach hauler in front. I might be mistaken.

Anyone know the whereabouts of the Roach Coach? Did any model companies ever build a kit?
Steve
It's in "the Egyptian" Don Boeke's building in Dayton OH with the rest of his cars(every one he ever owned, I think) I saw it there last summer.

Bobby if you recreate this in plastic you wil have the start of the best of the world of wheels in 1/24 plastic. I'll build you a scale arena, and you can enter it in the diorama class at shows. How many cars do you think you can build. I'll order the material for the arena lets go I'm pumped. Lets bring back the 70's at least in scale. YEA BABY!!!!!!!!

In my opinion... The real attraction of this car just might be it's striking resemblance to the face of Big Daddy's sweet little RAT FINK! Bill

Get an AMT Gurney Eagle kit - it's got all the engine, trans and suspension parts you'll need. It'll just be a matter of building the front section of the chassis, the little interior that the car had and that wild bodywork. Oh - the rolling stock may be a bit problematic - Those old Firestone Indy rain tires don't grow on trees.

I had a Swedish magazine called V8 ( do not confuse it with Finnish V8 magazine) long time ago. They had a few page feature about Roach Coach. Sadly I have lost the mag, but you can try ebay. It also featured strange six wheel Jaguar pick up..

I've always had a fascination for this thing, but there really isn't too much info out there on it. The stuff you guys just posted yielded more photos of it than I have ever seen in one place! Great stuff! Dave McG is right, it has a retired Indy car chassis/motor/driveline in it and that whole shell sits on top of it all. I think it may hinge open for access if I remember right. Too bad it didn't run. Can you imagine the tunes from those pipes? Woohoo!
If you scroll down that one link from the HAMB, theres some video of some other show rods being DRIVEN! The Sand Dragon and Invader are in it and a few others! Actually running showrods?! What will they think of next?!
I'd love to see someone build a model of this thing. I'd be even more excited to see a resin kit of it!

Thank you very much for the replys, and especially to kruhe67, great pictures! ;D Scurvy, I thought of from the beginning, for the engine and suspension parts, to this one: That kit featured a viable suspension and two different engine options. Both are Fords. One has Westlake heads and a standard position intake manifold and exhaust. The other is a dual overhead cam engine where the intakes are between the cams on the head with the exhaust coming out the center of the engine, in fact, exactly what we need... So far so good, until I opened the box and I looked at the small, very delicate parts... The scale is 1/25, but somehow too small for an attempt to cobble it to one Roach Coach... This is just my opinion. After an intensive search, I found in my stock of kits, something else. ;D I would rather prefer this kit: Well, the kit is in scale 1/20 and the needed engine is not the same, but the structure is very similar and with a few minor modifications you could make it right. In addition, Tamya is known for their incredibly detailed kits, there is also this one from over 100 parts. The motor with gearbox consists of about 40 parts, unmodified... I think, that this would be the right centerpiece for this model project, The Roach Coach. The really difficult part of this project, it would be this incredibly-designed body... Hmm...

Hobby Bobby. . . can you sculpt the body in a wax based clay and then make a mold? And go from there?
I know it will be perfect with the details when done.
I can't wait to see this one started!
