Today's project, finish plumbing and wiring the engine. I wanted an over the top plumbing setup for all those carbs. Wiring will just be the starter and alternator. This is what I came up with. The Ivory that the kit says to paint the block is too bright against all the black and looks fake to me, so I put a light wash of flat black on the engine to give it a slightly used look. This seems to have toned it down just enough.

The engine is in permanently the kit exhaust has been mated to the RG engine using the exhaust from a 2nd Elvira kit and the front suspension is done. The RG engine had much nicer exhaust manifolds, but it was tight getting the pipes to connect. On one side it aims right into the starter, I had to notch the manifold to change the angle enough to clear the starter. The other side is right up against the steering linkage. I still have to paint it. The chassis and interior are just about done.

I finally got a basecoat of black on that I can live with. Hopefully I'll be laying down the clearcoat tomorrow.

Haven't been following this build til today and I gotta tell you, it seems like a shame to hide those carbs. I think I'da cut the hood and used the air cleaners.

She's almost done. The body is ready to mount to the chassis. The flash loses the shine and reflections, but I can't get a good pic without it. With flash, Without flash,

Lookin' good!
Regarding the flash issue: your mileage may vary, but the camera I use most often seems to not like certain backgrounds. High contrast backgrounds, especially, wash the model out or punch it in, too darkly. To avoid the camera trying to over-compensate for the background, I generally use a light blue "sweep" (posterboard from Walmart, in a gentle curved "L" shape, under / behind the model) and the camera apparently gets tricked into thinking it's a sky background, or something. The automatic settings seem to get less confused, or something, and the shots seem to come out nicer; and with less fiddly effort. On some subjects I take the sweep and the model outside, to get natural light going on. That always gives me a notice-able difference, too, in how "easily" the auto settings "figure it out" and give me a good shot.
Gorgeous model! Can't wait to see that black paint, in all of its glory!
Oh, and ... any tips / suggestions / comments, etc. about using the clear you're using?

Thanks for the tips Ward. My camera has seen much better days, hopefully your suggestions will help. A new camera is not on the horizon for a while yet.
The clear I'm using is Nason Urethane. 4 parts clear to 1 part activator. USE A RESPIRATOR!!!!!!!!!!!
On a model, it doesn't seem to like an initial tack coat like you would use on a 1:1 vehicle. You have to lay your clear on wet and overlap your passes by 25-50%. Let your 1st coat tack for about 10 minutes and hit it again. If your body has a lot of fine detail, 2 coats should do it. The T-Bird was 2 coats. If you don't have fine details you can go 3 coats.
Remember, you are spraying some pretty toxic stuff, so protect yourself and your surroundings.

Once again, thanks for the comments. This is what I think is the worst part of this kit, the spiderweb grille. Not only is it ugly to start out with, the design of it sucks, the detail is just too fine to do anything with. It also is flush mounted if you do it according to the instructions. I wound up cutting the stock grill out and fitting the web grill in from behind, at least now it sits where it's supposed to. I tried every paint I had to do a convincing wash, each time was a miserable failure. I stripped the chrome and drybrushed silver to bring out the web and spider.

The wiring is done and I'm working on the upper radiator hose. Using the RG engine is making this difficult, you don't know how things line up until the body is attached. This means the hood is in the way. The hose on the stock tank is too short, so it's getting a braided line. Once I finish the engine bay, it's just glue the front bumper, mirrors, trim and antenna, and maybe paint the molded in trim. I hope she'll be done tonight. As she sits right now,

This is where your perseverance pays off.. it looks like a show piece to me and the interior is ...is.. is... hell , just killer ! ... those grills are a pain in the kester ... I always thought about hogging the whole dang thing out and trying to construct a web from tiny plastic spru or thread ... What you did with the grill is quite impressive considering what you had to work with ... it looks great ..

Thanks Chuck,
I was thinking of making a grill from Evergreen rod, but that is another trip to the LHS, more $ and gas. As this is a build for someone else, I had to draw the line somewhere, the grille was that line.
