You bring up a thought I've been having for some time and that is to open up my Shapeways shop and bring it to the public. I have not made it public for some made up reason, but now I'm rethinking to open it to the public with all the scales available. I did a quick count on whats in there and I would say there are about fifty parts that could scale out and be of use. Here is a shot of a "Zoomie" style header for the the small block Chevy. Maybe others would like this on the 1:24 and 1:25 scale. This one has been printed a good number of times in the 1:8 world. Going to the 1/25 and 1/12 scale would be no problem from what I can tell, but there is a minimum thickness that shapeways requires that may have to be accounted for. I'll keep you all updated on how that goes. I have just begun to look at how to open up the shapeway shop and know its a little task.

I'm thinking of doing that too for some of the stuff that I've designed - basic though it is, compared to the work you do. I figure if I've gone to the effort of designing it and someone else saw it and thought "that's cool! I want it!" then throw the design up there and share the love a little. I'm intregued by the metal finish options too on Shapeways - I haven't tried any of them yet, but imagine getting these printed in silver! Or even gold...they'd look incredible!

What is the price range on yours? I bought a 1/8th Hilborn setup like that off Ebay about 10 years ago, cast in resin with aluminum stacks, made by someone in Mexico, $25 at the time plus mailing to Canada, about $15.

The computer generated pictures are awesome, But... What all is involved in making the a rough, 3-D $20+ HILBORN intake look like this smooth plastic one, or a smooth $5 resin copy?Hosted on Fotki

Its been my bigget peeve with the printing industry companies claiming the surface quality is smooth. Its not smooth enough for me and the modeling community. I can go on and on about this, but the short end is to have a tool made of the part. A steel die of any part is very very expensive. I had a company quote me on my 1:8 wheels and he said it would be around 5k to make a steel die which granted would be smooth, but I just dont think I would re coupe my investment.
We are in an interesting time as I can make any part, but Im hand cuffed to the final output from the printers. Dont get me wrong the quality has gotten better over the years and will continue to get better. I'm just not sure if we will get to true model surfaces smoothness. Im with you all the way. Hope that helps on my take on quality. Sound more like a rant. LOL
BTW is the pic from the 1:8 revell upgrade for the Big T?

It's out of the vintage PE62 Chevrolet V8 Engine from Monogram. been considering droppin' it in the silicone to see what happens. Back to the 3-D. The question meant. How much work does it take to make the 3-D intake look like an injection molded one? And how is it done? Thanks! Bill lHosted on Fotki

Thanks for the pic! Regarding the work involved to getting the print to look like a molded plastic is a lot of work. The "white strong & flexible polished" material coming from Shapeways is hard to work with. Its smooth, but not as smooth as the cast part we see in models. Can you sand it? Not really. My best method of knocking down the surface pitting is to fill by priming and work that method. Big problem with that is on tight areas where you just cant get a good sanding tool on it. Granted I was having issues at the 1:8 scale and can imagine at the 1:25 going nuts.
Another option which I have done is take the print and use it as a master, then work with resin material to do finish work. Still will have to deal with the tight areas all modelers deal with, but at least you are not working with the print material. I feel like resin is a more flexible sanding material. In all honesty though cast intakes look great as prints because they have that fine surface pitting. A polished intake is another story. Chrome wheels another story.
All in all I feel like we are not there on superfine finishes, but we have to work with what we got! The "Certain" T body is the mail and once I get it I will post up the super fine detail surface pics!
Hope I've help to answer your question.
Mike

Sorry Kabby, I mistook this for the HILBORN thread. My mistake. No, you're right, it IS the Hilborn thread. Sorry for any offence caused. I'll go start my own forum by way of punishment.
