I found this computer drawing I did in 2006 of the Cord Of Wood while moving some files to the new machine. Thought I'd share... While this clearly shows the inspiration behind the current "True 3-D" version, there will be changes... I still like the skirts on the drawing, but the model will remain an open wheel well, and I like the 5 spokes I've picked better too. Till next time!

With the lions share of the "Stinger 'Cuda" built, and while I think up a paint job for it, I returned my attention to the "Cord of Wood". You remember that one, right? Now, When I picked it up and looked over where I'd last worked on it, I came back to the same delemma, I just wasn't very happy with the suspension, front or back. So, I scrapped both and went back to the mental drawing board. After searching several kits I have stashed, I came across the Testors "Boyd Smoothster". Not a great front end, but it had enough going for it that I went ahead and grafted it on along with a scratch made crossmember... It lacked a lot of details, so I sifted through the old parts box untill I found the needed extra bits of this and that... With that end covered, I scrapped out the modified Monogram Vette rear end I had in place and set about installing a narrowed version of the Smoothster IRS in it's place. I also added a driveshaft tunnel since the C.O.W. sits a bunch lower than the Speedwagon ever hoped to. Here's one more feature I'm planning to finish out, an opening trunk... That's all for now! Till next time...

Excellent look on this one, Mike. You really brought the Cord body to life. Perfect styling!
There is an old SAE article on dry brushing wood. There are also some wood grain decals. Some used to be available form slippery arts.
Here are some other decals -http://www.archertransfers.com/catSurfaceDetails.html
I can dig up the dry bush article if you want. Let me know.

Hey Mike, again love this build you're do'in. I was at a local hobby store today & found one of these Pyro Cord kits unbuilt in the box. looked at the bottom of the chassis & sure enough, there it was: copyright 1955 Pyro plastics corp -just like the picture you show !! The price was very cheap too. PM me if you want to know more.

While I continue to ponder the paint on the "Stinger 'Cuda", I am making progress on the "Cord of Wood". I have started painting parts that can be painted, with a present goal of completing a component or two... Here is a quick shot of the Corvette IRS rear end and axles showing what a difference a light wash of thinned down flat black over the universal joints can make, left side washed, right side unwashed. Here's the finished rear end, brake rotors front and rear. I haven't made the front calipers yet... I've made a radiator and it's supports, added some bracing to the crossmember and made filler pieces that bridge the gaps between the frame and the bodywork. There's also some ducting that fills some dead space and hides the back of the hood hindges. Started filling in the gaps between the undercarrage/interior and the bodywork in back... Added structural bracing and shrowding for the radiator... Here's the engine/radiator and firewall with the front clip off, you can see the pocket I made for the master cylinder/brake booster to fit in here. This is the inside of the front clip showing the shrowding and other structural parts. I filled the holes in the fenders where the exhaust pipes would have been... Another view of the front end with the clip off... The exhaust system takes shape... I'm not sure how or where I want it to exit just yet, but I got it to the back and have a fuel tank in the works too... Till next time!

Thanks to all! It's a labor of luv! After much thought and concideration I decided to box in the areas inside the back of the rear fenderwells. It just looked so vast and empty back there, and it would add trunk/storage space on a real car...Once that was done, it became much easier to finish out the exhaust system design. I pondered this long and hard as well, in the end I went with simple flared downturns, rather than trying to find a place I would be happy notching the body for an exit of some kind... So, they just exit inside the back ends of the outstretched fenders. Sometimes simple is the best. I still need to think up some hangers for the tail pipes... They'll attach to the 'clamps' around the flair tips. Thoughts, comments welcomed! Till next time!

You got some tight pipes there, Mike! Yes, do the hangers. They are so often overlooked.

I'm not sure if I caught it, have you decided on color yet? In a word, no. I have a direction, warm Earthy tones, classic light/darker wood with the darker being about the shade of the brown primer moving to lighter highlights. The body color is way up in the air. I've thought about everything from dark champaign to candy tangerine... I even pondered Turkoise... But I'm liking warm Earthy metallics... I'm going to need to nail it down soon if I want to get much else done, I'm running out of engineering! I am very open to color ideas if anyone cares to throw some out. I'm wanting to try some kind of rattle can auto grade touch up stuff. I'm not thrilled with how my Testors enamils have aged one bit, I don't have a ready available supply sourse for the new Testors laquers and I flat out hate cleaning my airbrush...
