.... That I chopped the fenders off this some 20 odd years ago, Zapped (Yes Zap, I hate the stuff!) a few bits together and then tossed it into a box and forgot all about it.... While looking for something new/old to busy myself with while the putty shrinks on the "Cord of Wood", I refound this again and picked it back up. Should make for a quick fun little diversion till I get cut. I cleaned up some parts that hadn't been cleaned up yet, dug out some tires and glued a few other items together better... Like the chopped windshield and busted roof. I had to scrape and file off the old Zap glue first... Yuck. Do they even make that junk anymore? I thinking black primer with a light tan roof, Mexican blanket interior... Thoughts/comments?

The only thoughts/comments I can think of are to put it in a box and label it to me when you get it finished...LOL!
You know how I like VWs...ha ha ha!
All kidding aside Mike, your thoughts are good ones. Definitely a cool looking volksrod build going on there. I'll look forward to seeing more of it as you work at it.

It is looking good so far.
If I may add my 2 cents. I would modify the roof to fit better in the back and add a little bit more body over the motor.

Hey Dave, what did you have in mind for "body over the motor"? If you've ever checked out volksrods.com that is how they look without the deck lid. I'm just curious as to how you'd treat it.

Thought you'd dig it A.J.! That's a fine looki' BugRod you got there Dave, those are the wheels I used on the Brass Monkey! I found the deck lid this evening and taped it on... Doesn't look bad at all, so I'll keep it around and see how it goes. I also layed the windshield back a little so the roof does fit better. Found a few other whatnots I'd set aside for this one... Stay tooned...

Hey Mike, you should see if you can find a deck lid from the old IMC Beetle kit. It's a bit earlier than the Revell kits and would make a much cleaner look. That is usually on the agenda in the 1:1 realm if you are building a volksrod out of a late model. The shortened deck lid doesn't have the effect of the longer ones especially if you can make it look like a full "W" deck lid.

Mike, my daughter had one of those kits when she was a kid and abandoned it in my basement long ago. That sort of build has been on my mind for what seems forever. I really gotta do one... I think they're about the koolest thing a guy can do with a VW.

AJ - I would have left on more of the deck lid and brought the sides down more and made it into the shape of a rounded W still leaving the motor exposed. Sort of like this. Dave

I've seen that done Dave but I'd never do it to a full "W". You'd get the same effect out of a semi "W" deck lid. But then again, that's on the big cars. I know what you are talking about though, it's what they did back in the day for Baja kits. I had a full size baja awhile back and the lid was cut just like you show it.

AJ - When I look at a VW I see lots of curves and not many straight lines thats why I thought the cut off rear body didn't seem to fit with the other body curves. I try to keep lines flowing. And yes I am perpetually old school with designs.
I love the way Mike's VW sits with the front wheels in front of the original wheel wells.

OK, ... my 2 pennies Mike, ... I really like this the way it's goin, Alot. This is where I always get stuck though ! ..... I'll mock something up, and then get lost in indecision ! .... but I definitely like this so far. I like the tire choice, and I would probably only suggest some "Cragers" or "Star" wheels. -Like I said, .. just 2 pennies, but I really just wanted to say, how much I liked this so far. I am sure you'll put the right twist's on this. Nice Work, ... More Please ! ;D ;D ;D

I agree with AL... don't get lost in the indecision. I like the bobbed look of the rear... just finish off the return and leave it alone... too much work will make it look fussy.

Mike will most certainly do what it takes to make a cool build whether it is detailed or not. He sure doesn't shy away from any extra work.

Thanks A.J., hope I manage to live up to expectations... Here's where it's at now, not sure the lid will live to see the end though... I raised the drivetrain and lowered the body as I saw done in another (real) ultralow Bugrod but, it moved the engine up enough that I think it will interfear with the lid... So, who knows what, if anything will be left once the engine is in place... Speaking of engines, I found the sweet little AMT Bug motor I'd squirled away some 20 years ago as well... Far better detail than the lump that Revell threw in the box. (Likely just fine on a full fendered stockish build) Here's a good look at the slant I gave the windshield, this made it swoopier and helped the top fit better. I'm leaning hard towards the Orange Hauler wheels since I done stoll the tires from it. They'll be painted with just the chrome caps and spinners... maybe.... I'm going to try a few different front axels out to get one wide enough and with enough drop to clear whatever suspension I end up with. Till next time!

As nice as the AMT engine is, it's still lacking detail in a few areas. I'll end up using a few parts off the Revell engine too, so I guess it'll be a FrankenBug! The lower half of the heads had minimal engraving detail for the cooling fins and pushrod tubes, (See above pictures) so I filed it all off and remade the cooling fins from .020 strip... Cooling fins finished... And pushrod tubes... Much better! Till next time!

Looking good!
I love the windshield slant.
The extra detailing on the motor is perfect.

Another test fit with the engine... Waiting for the cooling shrowd to dry so I can finish making the belt... Made the front fender well fillers... Pondering the possiblity of placing the front axel ahead of the 'boot'... Thoughts and comments always welcome! Till next time! P.S. to A.J. or anyone else who may have them handy... I'm looking for pictures of a bare bug body, mainly the front fenderwell areas with no extra sheetmetal or hardware on it... I'm having a hard time finding anything on the net...

Sorry I didn't get to the post sooner Mike, but it looks like Jay hooked ya up.
Just to add a note on those front inner fender wells Mike. It isn't uncommon to smooth the humps out where the fuel tank normally sits. I haven't done it on my 1:1 yet but it's on the agenda after a couple of cooler modifications.
Oh, and I'm sure you will live up to my expectations. I like what you did with the jugs already. Very cool! I'm not sure it is an AMT engine though, it looks like the one I'm using on my thunderbug mod and it came from an MPC Dune Buggy kit. It has some really nice detail to it but still lacks in a few places. I really like the duals you have going too. Very nice also.

I've got most of the second set of headers too, although I won't be using them quite like that... I also also have this complete chassis, but I'm only using the backbone, and rear suspension. It's much better looking than the suff Revell barfed in the box too. That parts' done already, I just need some pictures. Which are coming soon.

Ah, very interesting. In the pics it had actually looked like an engine I'm using. The engine I'm using just came to mind where it came from originally and that was the Shalako. It's nearly all chrome to start with and has some decent detail but your mods are definitely giving your engine the look and extra detail it needs.
Keep at it Mike, this is going to be a good one! Not that any of yours isn't...ha ha!

Mike... about that front axle... I think I'd keep it tucked just behind the lid. Something about it hanging out in the breeze just doesn't strike me right. Plus, I think it adds too much length. My 2 cents.

My 2 cents. Jon, you aren't wrong. In the 1 to 1 world of volksrods the axle is usually extended forward around 8 to 10 inches which usually keeps it tucked just behind the hood. The new axle location is typically where the spare tire used to reside. I've seen a couple of attemps to push the beam in front of the hood but the car starts to look like an altered wheel base. The tires on mine sit about even with the tip of the hood which is where I myself like it as well. But maybe Mike has a different idea and I like it when somebody does something I didn't think I'd like but makes it so it looks good.
