Take some flat black enamel and thin it down to a water consistancy .. brush it on and it will seek the lower points .. then lightly wipe the top off with your finger .. try this on a scrap grille to get the hang of it ..

that is the best way to blacken a grille that is the way i do it also.

Depending upon the type of grill you can remove the material behind it to expose the teeth only. If not then the above method will work.
