I am very curious about you all model car builders... every one has their own work shop... I have wondered where in the house you all usually do your work? I am sure most of them do them in the basement where they can hide their mess, even in the store room at garage or something. I would like to hear their spots they work in the house. Drop a line here I usually put mine in basement in the corner along with a drafting table where I can keep my work station. I have a corner table where all the supplies are kept and have two large mini drawer canister to keep all tiny pieces in and have a small home made wooden shelves where I can put all paint in and also I have two fishing gear to keep all the paints or supplies in for storage. And another question... do you all end up having four or five or even more models left unfinished ... and why? b

My son & I build models on our kitchen table & use rattle cans to paint them. At the end of the night we put them back in their boxes & put them away to keep my wife happy. Also to keep our cats out. We have many in progress models were working on. Sometimes if things aren't going right we put them aside & build something else. Have a great night Dennis & Dale

I have a cubby hole in my basement. It's a crawl space big enough to stand in. Since that is where my racks of models are, you may have seen pictures of it. But I work on an old (1930s) drafting table in the family room so I can watch TV or hang out with the family when I am tinkering. Have to keep it semi clean to keep wifey quiet and make sure the cat doesn't get at anything.

Cool...nice to hear different kinds of worshops... I have wondered if you all had wanted a dream work room where you all can have the most complete time u can enjoy.
Well my dream for a hobby spot is to build a cabinet which looks much likme a big secretary desk you can hide many things in and am working on it.. I also would like to have a small flat screen tv closeby where I can sit back holding the glued parts and watch tv... and also like to have one shelf next where I can keep mny books as reference.. and of course.. computer... and would like to own a rooftop balcony with a "studio" room there. Heh. A dream house.

Nice topic, it's always an interesting one since being nosey helps us think and bring new ideas to our hobby "spots". I build in the basement....the whole basement is mine, it's a man cave. ;D Wife rarely comes down here. I am moving soon, so no idea what I will do next....but for the time being I have been here. Well....actually I was upstairs in the spare bedroom for awhile until we had another baby. Unfinished projects....umm I lost count to be honest. I even sold a BUNCH of them off because I got so sick of having so many unfinished projects LOL Yes, I like ORDER! No messes, drives me nuts lol This is not the whole basement, but it's where the plastic and paint fly.

Sweet pictures, Bob!! I hate to see you leave all that but times are what they are! I cleaned out my basement finally! There are two giant weight training machines and now a free standing punching bag and weight bag. That was teh deal. Clean teh junk and put in more! LOL!! So now, I finally have my junkyard put in one pile although in a bunch of boxes. I am now going through the boxes to see what I will keep and what I will get rid of as parts on evilBay. I found junk and gold while buroughing through the stash. Took five years to get to it BUT I DID IT!! Now, Wife, leave me alone!! I had a big TV down there but wifey sold it at a garage sale!! Arghhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!
If someone is looking for something, hit me up. I may have it. Now, as a junk yard, there are no 1960s old kits. There are just 80s through 90s kits and odds and ends. I have tons of chrome trees. I even found an extra tree from a Lincoln Futura.
Have fun!!

Hello Everyone: nice areas with lot of space, I have 2 main work areas, the garage has a nice old steel desk, a huge honkin one, and then there's the computer room.
starting off fresh more or less, had to let go of the collection when dad passed away in 2007, expenses are a pain, but now I am rebuilding the collection one step at a time, the only car I saved was the last one dad held and enjoyed, my TD Bad medicine.
take care George

You guys are a hoot... I agree rod burner.. Looks like a great place to dig for fossiles in the cupboard for sure.. Mostly I paint in the auto shop but I build where Al Bundy would. In front of the Tv on my portable table. I have a work area up in the spare room. But.would rather sit it the room and watch the boob tube..If you can't guess. The work room has no Tv.. No room. To much plastic..

my building "table" is my kitchen counter. I can not work sitting down for some reason and i do all of my work while standing up. The counter gives ne a good view and i can crouch down to look at the model from all angles if i need to. I don't know, i just can't work while sitting. I do my painting in the garage and then bring the painted parts inside the house to dry. that bad part about this is that i have to clean up EVERYTHING when i'm done building for the day, hour or minute. I do have a spare room at the back of my house, which i MIGHT turn into my hobby room at some point. I just have to find the time t get it all set up the way i want it. it already has a t.v., dvd player and soon it will have an old sears silvertone record player/am radio console from 1947 in it. I also have a TON of old 78 rpm records from the late 40's & early 50's that will get played on it.

Basement? There IS NO basement!
Besides working for the P.O., I'm an artist, I draw comics. One room of my house is my library/drawing room. My drawing table doubles as my build table. I have storage for my stash, and I paint in the garage. I have roll-a-way drawers for all my supplies.
Picture taken about 1 & 1/2 years ago, 2 One-Arm Bandit gluebombs on the table.
Some of my published work framed on the wall.
Another pic, other models on the table, and some kits in the closet. Recognize the '34 on the table, Chuck?

The joke I hear among modelers talking about this is no matter how much room you have you only work in a space thats about a foot and a half wide and a foot deep.

I find it really cool to hear their styles and preferences.... in a way when we do hobbies, we feel as if we are a bachelor minding our enjoyments... enjoying the solo time, concentrating on building something. I have had grown up wanting many kinds of cars, I mean literally owning some cars. Yet, money is always the issue so I substitute model cars as a way to satisfy owning certain cars I always wanted.
I am curently working on building a wood shop cabinet where I can really combine everything in one spot and I can close it putting away or hiding the mess out. I spoke with couple of friends and they brought up something I didn't think of. They go to thrift store and find old tv armoire, changing the back with a better plywood then you can add many things in and use it as a workshop. Some say they put in lights, plastic mini drawers cabinet, some shelves you can put in to put paint bottles for easy access, you can even put under the tv shelf an old computer drawer using it as a main work area or reference... we really can brainstorm all the accessabilities. I would even look for the good one where I can bust out the door inside and replace with glass turning it into a display cabinet... just a 2 cent thought.
You all have brains to brainstorm ideas for workshops.. I enjoy hearing all your comments... thanks builders.

That armoire/cabinet idea is something I considered before as well, gives you the ability to build in some of the family spaces and make it disappear at will. Some of those pre fab furniture guys like Sauder actually had an item engineered to fit the bill a few years back. Hide away desk with work surface, sides hinged out from the center like two big boxes. Had lots of storage and ability to run electricity up the back for lighting and tools. I did a quick scan and found some of these available engineered for computers, not quite the same but a good substitute, start or pattern if you want to make your own or modify one. Some of these could also be locked to keep things secure.

Other than Dremel work and painting, all of my building is done at my computer desk on a piece of 1/4"wood about 5" x14".

Kitchen table for me... I have all my favorite parts in the bolt bins, and I've been building on the same square of what cardboard for years... I keep the projects in designated boxes and try and find the bottom. Everything tucks into a closet in about 5 minutes when I'm done. I paint outside...

There are many different ways building model cars... I once bought two large fisherman's hook case where they keep all fishing things in. I used this as a substitute putting overstocked paints, back up tools and paint, repairing tools and stuff. If I get to go to any model car events or show... I would just bring a medium fishermans case for emergency in case the model car I plan to show have a loose parts during the delivery. Its an idea I had when I first started my hobby. I went to sporting goods an got one rather than going to a specialized store because of prices.
