With a couple of my other builds stalled for lack of parts and pieces that need to dry, I thought I would break out another old favorite. I have never built an Ala Kart, but I am now. As I had this laying around for a few weeks, I was thinking of what could be done to "clean it up a bit". I decided the front of it reminded me of Jimmy Durante, just too much nose. I took a pic from the interweb and cut it up slightly to streamline it a bit. I dropped the hood slightly in the front and shaved a bit off the grille to tuck it back in a bit. This was all i had planned to do to it. WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you are a purist, do not look any further, you will hate me. As I've only ever seen stock builds of the Ala Kart, it was time to go a little nutz! After about a 1/2 hour of debating whether I should mess with it or not, out came 1/4" of the body, hood and nose. The amount taken out was so it could have single headlights. Well this looks cool, at least to me it does. What would happen if I raised the fenders, stretched the wheelbase and hung the front out there? I'm glad I didn't chicken out and go stock with it. After I get this all roughed out, I will probably split the fenders and running boards the widen them a bit, I'm also thinking of chopping the roof.

The body looks Great, but the fenders look a little too long to me...maybe not.

If you were doing that to the real one I'd be hunting you down....a plastic model of it....chop away.

I played around with the roof and the best look was to simply lean it forward. I also shortened the bed to take some of the overall length out of it.

this looks like a very good idea ... I love the bdy in that near racing car style ... like the XR6 inclining the roof is also a ver good idea ... for my taste the inclination in your mockup is too much ... too cartoonic

I got the right side front fender roughed in along with the widening the left side rear fender and running board. The rear is sitting to low and covering too much of the tire, it looks much better when it's raised up a bit. I wonder what a set of Pro Street tires would look like in the back? A comparison of the stock and widened rear fenders.

this looks really interessting! i really like that you sectioned the body sothat the grill ended up with single headlights! that section job is pure genius!
but i dont like the forward leaning top so much...hmmm maybe it will grow on me..
will follow this build for sure! and i´m already looking forward to the next update!

I like what you have done.
Great thinking outside the box.
However I am not a fan of the forward leaning roof.
What would it look like without the roof?
Just my 2 cents.....

Maybe it's the angle of the pics that makes the tilt on the roof look so severe. If you look at it from the side, the back edge of the side windows is straight up and the angle of the top of the roof equates to about a 1.5" angle chop. The back of the roof leans forward about 4", which is a bit severe, but doesn't bother me. I also plan to sand the roof smooth which will probably help with the look of it. It looks good without the roof, but I haven't chopped the windshield frame yet. With a little luck I can build it with a removable roof. I stretched the frame and moved the motor mounts accordingly. The engine will stay in the stock location, but the front suspension will match the extended wheelbase. The fenders and running boards are done being roughed in. A side view.

I didn't get much done tonight. Gluing the interior back together. Filling the gaps from the section on the body and grille.

Man that looks a whole lot better. Are you going to change the grille? Yes, but I don't know what I'm going to do with it. Maybe a billet grille would be cool. My idea with my builds so far is, "What would these cars look like if they were built today, not in the 60's era. Thus the modern wheels, stance and the like. I will admit, I almost built this one stock.

I really liked what Hobbybobby posted and did a slight variation on it. I took some of the original angle out of it and left it longer, the gap from the front edge of the roof to the cowl didn't look right. First the back of the roof needed to be extended. I cut the back center out and added about 3/16"to the back edge of the top piece. I'm not sure if it's leaned back as far as in his pic. I also added a gentle outward bend to it, the stock roof bends inward. Then the corner filler pieces were made and glued. Here it is back on the cab. So what do you think, looks better doesn't it?

Oh that's MUCH better!!! I didn't want to say it, but the roof was bugging me too... Great tip Bobby! Now that it's fixed I think you've got the makings of a first class 21st Century Modernization of the Ala Kart! Awesome! It flows like water! Just freaking awesome!
