Is there such a thing as a glue that sets fast, holds decent and will peel off without damage?
I remember using Shoe Goo to glue R/C batteries together back in the day, it fits the criteria, but I don't know if it's safe for styrene.
What do you use?

I've used a tacky putty for mockups.. Once I built a Monogram Sizzler Dragster using this stuff .. After a couple years I pulled it apart wiped off the parts and sold it as a builder! It doesn't stain - leaves no residue and is water soluable .. I'm thinking a company named Saunders (¿) sells it for around $3-$4 ... Something like this:

I don't know if it will help you, but I use a lot of masking tape, and for mockups on things like suspension, I just use a tiny bit of model glue and pop it apart for paint. This also leaves me an area to know where to scrape the paint from for gluing....

A professional modeler friend of mine, who has built radio controlled subs "forever," uses blue RTV silicone as a semi-permanent, "but you can still take it apart" glue for any assemblies he figures might need to come apart, "some day" ... but which, until then, need to stay together.

I use Elmers wood glue, it holds well and sets quick, and you can just pop the glue off with no residue left behind
