You can't glue a chrome-plated part to another piece with ordinary plastic cement. Scraping the chrome plating away from the area where you need to join, with a hobby knife, it takes a lot of beware, for the part, and also for yourself. The common solution to the problem, is to strip all the chrome plating off. But how? Well, using caustic household chemicals and repaint after assembly... Is a known possibility... But substances like bleach, brake or transmission fluid and caustic household cleaners such as Easy-Off ™ Oven Cleaner Spray have harmful vapors, cause skin irritation or are downright bad for the environment once leaving the home via the drain or the garbage. Is there another possibility? Yes, here it is, safe and cheaper. A friend told me about it, but I had to try it myself, because I did not believe it at first. What do you need? Coca-Cola®, clamps or other weights, a container, and your plated model part. Place the part within a container. The part must have a little weight added, it does not float, it should be wetted. Pour enough cola to immerse the part. After soaking overnight, the chrome has been removed from the part. Well, this method is certainly not fast, but as I said, as an alternative... ... and the stuff, you have at home anyway! Try it yourself! PS: Chrome remover as your favorite drink, um, questionable, right? ;D

Now I know why I do not drink Coke.
I use bleach or the purple pond to strip chrome, works fast and gets it down to bare plastic fast.

As with bleach, this method apears to remove the shiny chrome, but not the clear barrier that goes with the plating process. I always use Easy-Off oven cleaner sprayed into a cheap plastic container, add parts, spray again, add lid. After a couple hours I wash off the parts with dish soap, and a toothbrush, rinse, let dry on a towel. This method always leaves a nice clean (to the plastic) part......As a matter of fact, I have parts soaking as I type this..... ;D

windex will do the same thing, and it's easier to see windex dumped down the drain rather than a coke. the key is to get that clear barrier off of the plastic or new plating won't stick. windex seems to get the clear barrier off too. I just finished stripping some chrome parts in windex and it took a few hours for the chrome to dissolve.
