Sounds like a whole lot of modification to make that Vega look so great Dave. You'd never know it wasn't an original kit straight out of a box. Also, Chuck where do you find this stuff... ? LOL, awesome. Gerry G

I stuck another one on the pile tonight... Used Testors Fiery Orange metal flake, about three coats and then a Duplicolor clear coat. Pumpkin orange lines on the Good Boots. These things look great and are actually right up my alley, I used to love the Cartoons and Hot Rod Cartoons magazines as a kid. Takes me back for sure. ;D Gerry G

You are correct redbaron. I used washes and acrylics. On top of a chaos black prime I basecoated blood red. Then used a black wash. One drop of black ink + about 8 drops of future floor polish and about 5 drops of water. Slosh it on thick and fast. It will pool up in corners and crevices real well. Then selectively blob on some more later where needed. Then start layering acrylics. I started with a dark red. Mixed from the base coat red + some red oxide but burnt sienna with a tiniest bit of black works great too. I thin this down with about 3 drops of the paint and maybe 10 or 15 drops of water. dip you brush in it and wipe most of it of on the edge of the palette and start painting real tin coats real close but not on the deep washed crevices. Maybe 2 or 3 coats of each layer is needed. If you can hardly notice any difference after each coat your doing it right. Your putting it on so thin it dries almost at the end of each brush stroke. Then ad a drop of pure basecoat to make the mix closer to red and go again with 2 or 3 of those. Then red then red+orange then red + more orange with a tiny drop of yellow. Gradually working away from the dark areas. Then a real thinned down few hard highlight strips of yellow on the very edges that would catch light. So what ends up looking like red in actually made up of 5 or so different but complementary colors. Heres a tip. If you want to mix a good highlight color, never use white mixed in. Pick colors further up the color wheel. Same with shading. Pick colors further down the color wheel. When your done with these acrylics give the whole thing a good clear glaze. It rich-ens up the color real nice. I use mostly polyurethane matts. But you can use tamiya clear with however much matte additive you want. Sounds complicated but airbrushing just wont give the same effect.

I should mention the paints are citadel and Vallego. Also a good selection of kolinsky sable brushes. Windsor & newton, Davinci, raphael and the best value escoda. Dont use those sable roymacs they loose there tip after one or two uses and get binned. I have a Windsor & Newton series 7 size 3 that is 7 years old and has seen some hard use on almost everything ive done and it still has a perfect tip. Thats one hell of a $40 brush. Forget those 000 sises too, they hold bugger all paint that dries before you get it on and a big size kolinsky size 5 hase the exact same tip as a 000. As in a perfect tip. You can paint a thin hairline with both. I also have a good selection of liner brushes. Like mini pinstripers. And filbert brushed for dry and wet brushing. Filberts are amaizing for applying chalky pastels too. There usually for oils but make fantastic drybrushes.

Well I sat on my rump for too long and now it would take forever to comment on all of these great builds. Come decision time for voting, it's gonna be real hard to pick a favorite.
Although I'm a relatively new member, coming up on a year here, I have to say this contest is refreshing to see all the entries. I was beginning to think I found this site on it's decline, but this has me seeing things in a different light.
Great builds everyone!!!!!!!
