WING TEMPLATES!I'm adding Wings to the Vette Jet. I started by cutting out Templates from the back of a pad of paper, any File Card type cardboard will work. I first cut out the basic shape then I started fitting the Template to the side of the Vette. Next I traced the Wing Shape on to sheet plastic, 4 times... I ended up changing the Wing Shape a little more before attaching it to the Vette. More Coming...

VETTE'S GOT WINGS!I glued a length of 1/4 inch wide Plastic Strips, on the sides, to position the rear Wings. I sanded the edges where the Wing Ends come together, for easier gluing. Then I glued the Bottom halves of the Wings on the body, below the Plastic Strips, with Zap-A-Gap, Green Label. I glued the Top halves of the Wings on the body, along the Top of the Strips. I also glued the Wings together on the sides. Then I glued the Wing Halves together along the Front Edge. More Coming...

I decided to add a length of Half-Round Plastic Strip to the edge of the Wing. This should make a nice rounded edge. Here it is in place. I cut some plastic to fill in the rear of the Wings. Here it is in place. More Coming...

FRONT WINGS!I cut 2 Front Wings from .080 Sheet Plastic and glued them in place with Zap-A-Gap Green Label. Notice the Wings are mounted along the main body seam, this saved a lot of body work in that area. More Coming...

UP IN THE AIR!I decided to display the Vette Jet floating above a rectangular base. Here is how it was done... I picked up a 6 foot length of clear 3/16 inch rod from Tap Plastic and a bag of Plastic Tube with a 3/16 inch hole. First I drilled a hole for the Tubing. Then I put some glue on the end of the Tube and slid it into the hole until it touched the inside of the body. Made sure it was straight then I put some Zap-A-Gap around the tubing on the outside of the body. I cut off the tube flush with the body. Here it is with a length of Clear Rod in place. I added another Tube of the same on the front of the Vette. The Base is an AMT Product. I found these Bases in the 12th scale Cord and a 16th scale Corvette. I drilled a hole for the Tubing and glued it in place. I positioned the Tubes inside 2 collars inside the Base. I added a larger Tube around the original to make it more secure. Then I added a small piece of plastic on the end, as a Stop for the Rod. More Coming...

MORE POWER!!!The X-Wing Engines just weren't BiG enough for the Vette. I decided to switch to larger Pod Racer Engines instead. I think 6 Engines from 3 Pod Racer Kits will be enough... I cut the Rear Ends off all 6 Pod Racer Engines. I'll use those Engine Sections for the Vette Jet! I found some large diameter Plastic Tubing to mount the Engines with. I cut 6 lengths of tubing and fit them in the Taillight Holes. Then I cut 6 round pieces of plastic and glued them on the ends of the tubes. This should make Engine Mounting easy. More Coming...

FINS!I decided to add Fins to the Wings. I cut a Fin Template from paper and when I got the shape right I traced the Template on to Plastic. Then I cut out 2 Fins with an X-acto Knife and a Straight Edge. Next I sanded the Edges smooth. Here are the Fins glued in place with Zap-A-Gap. Front View. More Coming...

SIX BIG ONES!I cut 6 lengths of Plastic Tubing and then added a circle of plastic to each end. With a little Sanding and Grinding I got them to fit in the Taillight holes. Next I glued the Tubing to the ends of the Engines. Here is a quick mock-up showing the Engines in place! More Coming...

VETTE JET at NNL West 2014!I got the Vette Jet Body Work smooth enough so I could get a good coat of Primer dry in time the show at NNL West on Feb. 1, 2014! Here are the models I brought to the show. Most of the builds were from 2013. I should have Vette Jet Finished for NNL West 2015, hope to see you there! More Coming...

Bubble Top!Instead of a Convertible I decided to add a Bubble Top to the Vette Jet and I'm going to make it from a large plastic Brandy Bottle. I applied tape to the cut lines for the Bottle, then I marked the Lines with a Sharpie. I cut the Bottle in half with a Cut-Off Wheel, then I made additional cuts with RC Body Trimming Scissors. I am leveling off the bottom of the Front Bubble Top Half by moving it back and forth on Sandpaper. I will cut another Bubble Top for the Back Half. More Coming...

Double Bubble! After soaking the Bottle in hot soapy water I was able to remove the labels. Then I soaked a paper towel in Goo-Gone and laid it on the labels for an hour. The label glue came off pretty easy and I washed the bottle in hot soapy water. Here is a test-fitting of the Front Bubble. After trimming the Front Bubble to fit pretty well, I traced it's shape on to the other half of the Bottle and cut it out. Here is a mock-up of both Bubbles in place. I'm going to wait a few days before I do any more cutting, I need to think a little bit about the next step... More Coming...

New Bubble! When trying to fit the Rear Bubble to the Body Contours I cut too much off. The Rear Bubble was a little too low for head clearance. So I traced the Front Bubble on to another Brandy Bottle and cut it out. I used a Razor Saw to start the cut in the bottle, then I cut the rest with Lexan Scissors from Kyohso. Alcohol wipes are good to remove the Sharpie lines from tracing the New Bubble. Here is the New Rear Bubble in place! Plenty of headroom now. Rear View. More Coming...

New Fins!I decided to change the Shape of the Rear Fins. I drew the outlines for the New Fins on the Old Fins. Using a Cut-Off Wheel in a Dremel Tool I cut off the sections to be removed. Next I Sanded down the Shape of the Rear Fins so that they blended into the Wings. I also cut out small Fins for the Front and glued them in place. More Coming...

Holy crap, this is neat! Puts me in mind of a car for an amusement park thrill ride, if any amusement park put that much design time into their attractions.

This is cool did you design the body around the Brandy Bottles as they fit so well as the bubble tops. I didn't even know that Brandy came in plastic bottles.

Mounting the Bubble!I will be using Quarter Round Plastic Strips to make a Mounting 'Ridge" to hold the Bubble Top in place. First I tried to Flatten the Mounting Area with a large Sanding Block. Then I started measuring for the Center Line and the outside edge of the Bubble Top Area and marked them. Here is the front section with the Center and Outside Lines marked. Here is the rear with the same Lines marked. Then I traced the shape of the Bubbles on the Front and Rear Areas. More Coming...

Gluing The Ridge!I started by gluing the first Strip along the Straight section on one side. After it dried I started bending the Strip to match the curve. Next I added Zap-A-Gap Glue a little at a time and held the Strip down each time until it dried. Then I would glue a little more, hold it down and then do a little more... Next, I glued down the second Strip the same as the first Strip. After the glue dried I Test Fit the Bubble Top. I had to correct a couple spots by breaking the glue bond with an X-Acto knife. I worked the X-Acto Blade under the Strip and pried it up. Then I repositioned the section and glued it back down. More Coming...
