As I don't have the patience to make my own, I found these at the LHS. They are springs used for the coupling on H.O. trains. They are made by Kadee, part #622. It looks like there are a dozen in the pack for $2 The package they come in. And one of the springs next to a piece of 1/16" rod for reference.

Two items I have heard about but not tried are: "N" gage rail couplers springs and light bulb filaments, be very careful please.
