First of all: The following build-ups are not mine.
I encountered them while making my annual round over the INTERMODELLBAU in Dortmund, Germany taking photos of things I like.
These I "found" at the table of a collective of firemen(!) - Hope the pix display well, I try hotlinking from my website.
If it doesn't work, please tell me and I'll "up" them to photobucket.
As you can see these are under glass and on rotating turntables. Sadly the guy who did them was just making his round taking pictures - Otherwise I would have asked him to either stop the turntables or maybe get them out of the cabinets.
But on the other hand this led to the following little scene:
Me (having just taken photos and approaching the one guy behind the various tables and cabinets): Hiya, the show rods are great. Who's done these?
Guy (Just looking up from his tablet or smartphone or whatever): The what?
Me: The -ummm- CARS over there. They are great.
Guy: Are they? Well, they're not mine, guy who made 'em is away taking pix.
(He somehow looked annoyed)
Me: Anything the matter?
Guy: Well, yeah, personally I like real stuff.
Me: Huh?
Guy: Yeah, things which have a counterpart in real life.
Me: Uh, they have. The originals were built by legendary customizers and one was featured in a TV series.
Guy: Errrrrrr...
(Empty look. Which I took as a cue to make my exit)
Just for justice's sake: Usually the modeling collectives of policemen or firemen center their work around their jobs. You will see lots of fantastic dioramas showing their work in every detail and at a rather small scale. Usually it's 1/87th. Like this one:
So it's forgiveable that he doesn't take an interest in show rods. But his attitude towards the work of his comrade and me was, well, leaving something to be desired. At least in my opinion.
Oh, and should you like to see the rest of my pix (no more show rods, sorry), here's the link:
