The science-fiction model club I belong to is having a challenge build: A jet- or rocket-powered car or boat, due next September. Since the title is a bit of a mouthful, it's been abbreviated to "Jet Car Challenge". I had an inspiration. ABC Family's short-lived series "The Middleman" is possibly the best and funniest sci-fi adventure show ever to have been on TV. In it, apprentice Middleman Wendy Watson is given a Smart car for business use. And one day, her boss, the Middleman, shows her just what the red key does: A big ol' jet engine sprouts up, significantly increasing the car's performance. Revell of Germany made a Smart car kit a while ago; I was able to get an assembled one from eBay. Since it was a snap kit, it was easy to blow it apart for modification. The jet engine made a nice little scratchbuilding project; I turned the basic shape out of acrylic rod on my lathe, photoetched some insignia for the side, then built inlet and exhaust details. A little Tamiya paint, and voila: It isn't 100% accurate, but you're certainly not going to mistake it for anything else. . .

I must’ve missed this post - what a cool idea for a build!
I drove one of those cars once, it’s like piloting a bar stool...would’ve been pretty hairy with that rocket on top 😂
