This is one of my long-awaited and desired kits, what a great design by Tom Daniel! In the box are parts molded-in a metallic purple, 2 huge sprues of chrome parts, clear sprue, red and clear tubing and big rubber tires for the back and front and the decal sheet has also been updated. It's a BIG-BIG model, 1/8 scale, over 15 inches long and nearly 13 inches tall! The plan was to build this kit straight out of the box... ... but then I saw the rear tires... Actually I thought that the parts are in a somewhat newer condition... But what bothers me more are these two-piece rubbers that are always warped and that never really fit together... ... and those of you who know me, know that actually I would much more prefer something that is wider, like this: So these parts also have to go away:

Well, I started taking the parts out of the plastic bags and, as I always do, inspecting everything... The parts are all there... For those of you who just want to polish the metallic purple plastic and don't want to paint it, that's to say: There is ALOT of flash, especially on the metallic purple parts... ... and in some very clearly visible places, the sprues gate points, required by the injection molding process... Chrome is good, but still alot of flashing... The fitting of the pieces requires of sanding and modifying to fit properly and I won't be able to do it without putty...

As mentioned earlier, I like the idea with the much wider rear wheels... ... so I'll go in that direction... for this I cut two pieces of PVC pipe and turned it on the lathe roughly the same diameter as the original rubbers, but much wider... Here's a roughly test, to see if they fits:

Now that I won't be using the original tires and rims, I had to look for an alternative... Since the rims will now also tend to be larger, only something from the RC group is considered as a donor... I still have these in stock: But which one is the right one? For now it doesn't matter... ... because all three have the same outside diameter... So i start with two aluminum tubes... ... to turn out the rims and to adapt them to the rims... Here, turned, sanded off and polished...

Ohhhh, I LOVE a Bobby build! Always something to drop the jaw in these threads 😍
I like the middle wheel, of those three, but I know you’ll end up with something cool whatever you do! 👍🏻👍🏻

Bobby - Another killer build in the making! I had this kit way back when it first came out. Its on my "to get" list.
I always love your take on tires and wheels. I'm really looking forward to watching this build progress. You're work is very creative.

From these two PVC pipes ... ... I turned the tires on the lathe and created a little profile with a knurling tool...

Now I can push the rim in with a little pressure... ... and this is how it looks put together, but still without color... Hope, you like it...

In the meantime I've done a couple of gluing and deburring, here is a selection... ... the chrome-plated parts are not all made of the same plastic, some are black and some are purple, no idea why... ... and despite putting them together exactly, some parts show an offset that I had to remove... ... unfortunately often in the most visible places...

From the rear, the rims weren't that great, the spokes were poorly cast and the holes between in some places even closed, so I fixed that... Here are the finished wheels: Here is a size comparison with a couple of wheels that I otherwise make "normally" for my builds...

I deburred more parts, here the fine "little" ones... The front rim consists of two spoked parts, whereby the spokes are too thick for my taste, so they had to be deburred and narrowed... ... that required a lot of patience from me and i had to be careful not to cut the spokes or my fingers... The brake drum has only indicated holes for ventilation on both sides, instead of painting them, i drilled them out...

These are all parts for the frame, I wanted to show the inside in the picture on the right because it is hollow... ... i guess because of possible warping and cavities in the otherwise thick parts... ... as can be seen in the picture below on the left, the recess in front of the hole for the rear axle... And this is what the glued frame looks like...

The kit has a plastic rear axle. In order to mount my now heavier rear wheels, i thought of a simply threaded rod with a couple of washers and cap nuts... When I screwed the whole thing together, I noticed that it was a bit unstable and the rims were not centered... ... to fix this, i took a 4mm inox rod and cut a thread at both ends... Now the new axle does not fit through the holes, so these had to be drilled out... ... in order to center the rims and mount them more stable on the axle i turned these PVC- discs... ... which now fit exactly into the recess on the back of the rim... Everything screwed together looked like this... But now, the axle with the wheels can wander to the side and brush against the frame... So, I have measured exactly, took everything apart and turned additional spacer tubes, which will then center the whole thing. These are all the parts I need to achieve my desired result... ... and so pre-assembled, the rim will be between the PVC- disc and the washer with cap nut... Here is a rough overview of what the rear wheels will look like to the body... Hope, you like it.
