I wonder whether it's a "fan" creation as opposed to a legit store display?
Wasn't/isn't there someone out there making cardboard store display bases in the style of legit factory story display bases?

Not sure, but anything is possible. The guy who owns this has an "entire house" to house his collection. This guy has TONS of original Hot Wheels Redlines, early Monogram / MPC / AMT / Johan models, Schwinn Stingrays, Slot Cars and all kinds of schtuff I have never seen before so I doubt this one artifact is a fake.
