All lettering by hand. I wanted it to have a more "imperfect" look. Thanks guys! It's been fun bringing this thing into being.

Thanks, guys! The other cars in the Vintage Drag class were really over the top, detail- and paint-wise. What I'm trying to say is that neither I nor Jeff placed. Still had a great time, and Scuzzo, Jeff and I did all manage to take home trophies in other classes.

Please discuss among yourselves and ask questions... ;D Questions it is, then. I missed the beginning of this project. Where would I go, to catch up on the whole project? (Then after reading all of that, I'll likely have more specific questions!) For right now I'd love to know what inspired it, and any kits involved in its creation ... that sort of stuff. Oh, and ... coolness!!!

I think I started this car back during the time of the OLD Coffin Corner.
I had started gathering parts for a Jawbreaker that I'd already modified the body on when I picked up this Gunze Messerschmitt as a bagged kit for something like $3.00. As I looked at my newly acquired minicar, it struck me that I could fit it around the back of the Jawbreaker's chassis, and my project took a serious turn into weirdsville.
The next strange curve was rounded when I decided that the Hemi from the Jawbreaker just wasn't the right mill for the job... but what was? Inspiration struck, and I pulled out two Red Baron six cylinders, cut the crankcases of both blocks and siamesed them together, making my own V-12. On the front, I added a Paxton blower from the '57 Ford, fed through Hilborn injectors modified from pieces in an MPC flip-nose Vette into the plenum from the AMT '41 Ford Woody Street Rod and then into the main plemums I built from square brass tubing. I ran hard oil lines from the block to lubricate the upper cylinders/heads and wired the crank-mounted magneto to the tops of each cylinder. Exhaust stacks are aluminum tubing washed with burned metal to tone down the sheen.
The frame was given alternate mist coats of Floquil Roof Brown and Tamiya Light Gunmetal, then drybrushed with Model Master Rust on the joints before i washed the whole assembly with the Rust-All system. The body was given a coat of Roof Brown, then treated with the Rust-All system on body seams and where I'd removed the fenders (little mounting holes drilled around the edges). When that was dry, I "masked" these areas with moistened sea salt, let that dry, and then painted the entire body with a coat of Model Masters Light Ivory. More washes and weathering followed. All lettering and graphics were hand-applied.
Front wheels and tires came from West Coast Choppers diecast motorcycles. The rear tires were Tamiya F1 items while the wheels are Monogram Stinger centers in Detail Master machined aluminum hoops. Steering is via a Groovy Grader "wheel" and the tach and five-point harnesses are also Detail Master items. The stock rear Messerschmitt suspension and rolling stock does duty as a wheelie bar.
I think that pretty well covers it... I'm sure there are a few things I've forgotten, but that covers the high points.
Dave

Dave,
I did find out some info. about the contest & the " vintage drag " class. Turns out a judge approached me stortly after it ended & mentioned he like our builds. Turns out that class was just too tough to tame, a real cluster fok if you understand & you do...!
Soooo they had only one choice & that was to score reproductions of real race cars & or documentations (photos) of scrathbuilding the model... Naturally, Ron Ramsey's had both & won the class but top places where reproductions.
Hizoot ;D
