This is an idea I've kicked around for years, mostly because I like the name, a great name can make a great car you know and this IS a great name (I think), the " Cord of Wood". I made a custom Hot Wheels a few years ago (Sold on the bay) and was fairly happy with the results, but not as happy as I was with the name itself. So, I did some sketches, and more sketches, but they still didn't satisfy, I needed a nice 3-d, hold in your hands version, since I don't have the "jack" to build a real one... After the fun of putting the "Dutch Treat's" body together, I felt I was up to the challenge of making the "Cord of Wood" a scale reality now. So, I nailed a vintage partial built Pyro Cord Convertible off Ebay for under $10, delivered. When it arrived I had no idea it was older than me... This is the real copyright date from the bottom, Yep, that reads "1955", here's the box top, Nice artwork, huh? Anyway, I cut away the parts that made it a Cord, and combined them with the "Woodie" parts from a Dan Fink Speedwagon, along with most of the chassis, interior and engine... Oh, and part of another Speedwagon body... Nuff talk already, pictures! Everything red is the 1955 Pyro kit, white parts Speedwagon, modified... I cut about 3/16" off the top of the grill/louvers lowering the hoodline drasticly, but not obviously (Unless you have another Cord to compair handy, check the box art). I moved/added some of the "Wooded" slats so they lined up with the Cords "louvers" better. The Speedwago has two, "Cord of Wood" has three. I also slanted the rear section harder, this required another Speedwagon to match the trim proper. These won't be the final wheels ether, I'll be using some nice "T" 5 spokes from Pegasus Hobbies (Thanks Tim!) The small block Ford will get full detail and an under hood Supercharger, after all, Cords came with Supercharged V-8's when new, right? I'm thrilled with how this is coming together so far, not sure on color yet... Oh, any tips on creating natural looking "Wood"? Thoughts, comments?

Oh man, that is totally bitchin' Mike.... I'm surprised that old styrene bonded to the new stuff....lol. Great styling on your part, this looks to be one awesome build when finished. I think I would go with a HOK orange, or sunrise orange pearl. Love the name too!!!

Here is an other modified Cord. My Cord is Lindberg´s (i.e. Pyro) convertible as a Coupe.

Nice work. Reminds me of the Cord chassied carved-side hearse I'm working on. The only criticism that I'd offer is that all Cords were front-wheel drive. You could use the drive train out of the Monogram Cord. I'm using that kit to bash the hearse.

Nice and interesting ideas with those Cords. How about using the Engine and FWD from a Toronado? ?

Great idea Mike,
Those Thom Taylor woodies need the help & you delivered..! I myself, find those stock kit engines a bit small & whimpy for my taste. Just a thought but if you're going to all this trouble might as well beef it up..!
Keep up the good work,Hizoot

Your off to a great start. It's amazing how you got the two to fit nicely and to actually work together. What about the wide-whites..did they come with the kit? And I agree with the color...if your going to put in wood, stick to a "warm" color like the orange's mentioned.

Very Nice idea Mike. The combination looks better than either kit by itself. Can't wait to see it finished.

Why thank you my good Gentelklowns! Yep, I'm mighty pleased with it so far! Front wheel drive? No self respecting Hot Rod has front wheel drive... I thought about all wheel drive ah-la Syclone, but that would have made getting the front end down harder, so I went with a simple classic rear drive design. Bigger engine? I also debated with using small block Chevy power but it so common... I also thought about using the Matt Hayes T-Bird small block Ford as it's a little bigger than the Dan Fink engine, but not as well cast (detail wise) so I opted to stick with the DF Ford. I am likin' the candy orange color idea though... Stand by for lots of updates as this bad boys grows together!

I had meant to comment earlier on this nifty project. This looks great! --like someone said earlier, it looks better than either donor kit.
Did you lower the hood by eliminating one of the longitudinal louvers on the side?
If the Pyro Cord is half as lumpy as their Auburn, I feel for you; way back when, I built a Cord pickup and sedan delivery--but I started with the Monogram Cord, which made life a lot easier...

That's going to be a good looking rod when you get it done. Man I was looking for a mint one of those, I built that Cord when it came out it was neat. They also had a VW I built it too I believe it was molded in red also. I was 7 years old then. Wow time fly's when your having fun!

Got my Pegasus wheels at last and here they are "installed"... (Don't squint, the next one's better!) Made the tilt mechinism for the hood too... (clearer image of the wheels as well...) I just love the way the hood "Floats" when opened! The motivator is evolving nicely here... The engine "topper" is pirated from a Hot Wheels! (SemiFast II) Till next time!
