Satan’s Ride
Wanna go for a drive with the devil himself? Hop in and he’ll take you for a real hell ride in his hopped up custom bubbletop pick up…….Satan’s Ride!
This was originally inspired from a drawing of the Kandy Klown by Harry Bentley Bradley. I’m also a Big Daddy Roth fan and really love his work with bubbletops. I wanted to combine Roth and Bradleys ideas but have my own creation. I was also greatly inspired by Aaron Grote’s Atomic Punk, I made my grille in that style. I tried to keep this in the ‘60’s spirit and style as much as I could.
This went thru a couple color changes before I settled on Testors Revving Red. I had more problems with painting this, heat, humidity, rain day after day made this a nightmare to paint. Everytime I put on a coat of lacquer it dried dull. I had to wait for perfect weather to get the final 2 coats on to get the shine.
Bed:
This started with a ’29 Ford pick up bed moded with the fins and a scalloped tailgate. The usual putty sand, putty, sand, etc….then prime, putty, sand, etc….. I formed the tail lights to the sculpted fins. The bed interior is lacqured mahagony veneer. I used 2 pieces of ¼ round evergreen glued together for the bed floor rails. Rear bumper is some trim from the Paddy Wagon.
Interior:
The interior seats and tunnel are from a ’60 Corvette, sides and armrests are scratch built and BMF trim. The dash is altered from a ’60 Corvette. The bubble is made from a salad spoon cut down. Rear window – clear plastic film.
Body:
I cut and altered a cowl from a ’29 Ford pick up. I then added scratch built sides and back. The top “roll bar” is scratch built from styrene and putty. Thanks Dan Barten for the top fin idea!!!
Grille:
Completely scratched built from styrene. The inner grille is a cut down seat cushion. A strip of half round crowns the top.
Engine:
For this build I wanted a massive engine with tall menacing looking stacks. The hemi is from the Good Guys ’41 Willys. I added wiring from a computer mouse cord. Distributor – scratch built. Stacks are cut and carved aluminium tubing. Pipes – Beer Wagon. Man, I tried soooo many exhaust types on this before I settled on these. I know there are probably better ones out there, but these are the ones I thought looked best out of what I had to choose from.
Wheels & Tires:
Rear tires – Monogram 2 piece, inner piece painted as whitewall. Chrome reverse wheels.
Front tires – Skinny tires with hand painted white walls. Wheels – Chrome trims and center caps, clear plastic inner wheels.
Satan:
Plastic figure of Big Daddy Roth. I carved the horns and painted them and all skin the color of the vehicle.
This was a real learning experience. The bench was a total mess during this build. You know, mucho plastic grinding and sanding, sanding dust, putty chunks, etc…. I couldn’t begin to count the hours I have into this.
Overall I am happy with the results. There are a few things I would have changed if I were to do over…..but that’s another build!
Why did I build this…..the devil made me do it…..
I hope you enjoy it.
