... for a local club challenge, I picked this kit to work on. Of all the models I built as a kid, this was the one that I remember the most as being the hardest. Now I wanted to try it again!
I was going after the look of the race car version, which made it a little easier to work with the pieces because the race car didn't have everything chromed. Still, putting this one together means working with lots of very tiny pieces, and then there are the seam lines that need to be taken care of.
The gas tank and the frame got the Alclad Chrome treatment ... the frame's seam lines were pretty bad. I handled the frame so much after the Alclad painting that, of course, the Alclad wore off in a couple spots.
The article in "Hot Rod" magazine said the original car was painted Naples Orange. I used Testors Hugger Orange, as it has that reddish orange color I was going after.
I've read of one builder's experience with the decals who said they fell apart on him ... thankfully, not mine, as they went on perfectly.
Then there's that dang resin hood. I did the hot water treatment to bend it into shape, but the car will be displayed body up anyway, so I wasn't going to try and get the hood into an exact fit match (you can kind of see it in the photos, but the hood actually spreads out a little on the bottom).
The car did get finished in time for the club contest, but needs a little tweaking ... I accidentally put too much pressure on the driver's side door and popped it out, hinges and all. I did a fast fix, but the door doesn't sit right, not as good as it did before. I'll get that fixed and then post photos of the finished car.
This kit is a bear ... but gotta admit, once its done, looks awfully good on the shelf.
