the prices people pay for that model is stupid. it is the same model as the yellow '29 ford roadster, minus the 'board and scuba gear. this is also the same with the '27 ford black widow. make a roadster body from a touring car model and use the axle and wheels/fenders from a green hornet roadster model. by the way, the decals are also available for these two. vsrnonline.com/gregsdecalgraphics/VintageKitDecalsStaticKits/Index.htmlin case you haven't figured it out yet, this is what i am doing right now. ;D

The yellow & silver Monogram '29 roadster pickup is the same body, fenders, top, engine block, and most of the chassis/suspension as the Blue Beetle, but there are many parts that are very unique that are gone. The BB had a tuck-n-rolled firewall, custom bucket seats, roll bar, bed cover, Cadillac valve covers & six carb intake, along with the mentioned scuba gear & surf board. It also had custom 5 spoke mags (rear), and chromed reverse wheels (front) both with two bar spinners, also early Ford drum brakes. Without the unique pieces, it's hard to come close to doing a good clone. I did a close clone a few years ago, but I had most of the parts needed from a glue bombed original.....I also have an original BB, and the next version, the Boss A Bone, which has all the unique parts as the BB, but no surf board, and the A bone has a set of 5 spoke mags on all fours. The engine, now called an Oldsmobile has the dual quad tunnel ram, and finned valve covers that have remained in the kit all these years. All reissues after these two have new firewalls, a bench seat, the front axle has been retooled, and a new rear spring. Gone are all the cool features that made the Blue Beetle what it was.....a very cool sixties hotrod truck!!!
BTW, I agree, a decent clone can be done to make a Black Widow, but who can resist an original? One great point you made, Gregg makes awesome decals, I used a set on this resto....

maybe i should clarify my comment. i meant you can build one for your own display that is close enough. yes you do have to kitbash a little too. by the way ratrod, those are exceptional copies you did. AA+++

Hey RatRod! You mention that the front axle and rear spring in the Blue Beetle/Boss A Bone were retooled for later issues. Any chance that you have the parts available and could post a photo comparison?
And beautiful job in those built-ups you posted. I love the dark blue metallic on your BB.

Brian, sorry I don't have one of the new '29 pickups inside to take photos of. The front axle on the newer kits is a little beefier, and has different mounting pins for the wheels. The BB, and Boss A Bone used early ford drum brakes to mount the wheels, the newer kits don't. The rear spring on the newer kits are a little beefier too, and let the axle sit a little lower than the originals.
