Yeah, he's definitely determined. My wife calls him a flying armored slug and says he's kind of cute; I call him "Irving" (well, I had to call him something!).

Wild looking! Is this based on 'something' or is it just something you dreamed up? It's incredibly well thought out! How many little whirlie-gigs will the finished version have?

The genesis of the idea was the Albatross, the airship in Verne's Robur the Conqueror, but the addition of Irving was my own idea. The backstory is that the airship is part of an expedition, circa 1898, to one of H. P. Lovecraft's mysterious and horrible lost cities, and has run into a bit of trouble. Here's a link to some illustrations from Robur: www.sil.si.edu/imagegalaxy/imageGalaxy_MoreImages.cfm?book_id=SIL28-091It'll have 18 rotors total. Most will be whirling, and made of clear plastic disks, but at least one will be stopped, as will the propellor which drives the thing along--which means I had to build a whole carload of propellor blades. A good pastime for a rainy morning

Irving rocks! You say he was a McDonalds premium? He looks like the cousin of the Cloverfield beastie. This very interesting...

Irving kind of looks like a "gooberfish" from Star Wars. I have a huge toy of one of them in my son's collection! Beastie!
I like what you've got going on with this, lot's of good imagination and by golly IT'S SOMETHING DIFFERENT!!! YAH!

I'm now in the painting stage, at least on the upper hull. Tonight I broke out my oils and painted decks. I don't care if I never see another deck. And Irving is ready for paint, too--I think I'll keep him orange; the color kinda grew on me--or will that make his origin too obvious? Tim N already sussed it out...

So now I'm in the midst of painting things--and when I'm not painting, I'm fiddling with photoetch; this is a searchlight platform and the pilothouse, both built from scratch. The photoetched railings and ladders really perk them up: And Irving just needs a bit of detail painting, and he'll be done (although I'm thinking about giving him eyes on stalks): The "dinghy" is painted, but I still need to add its engine: ... and the decks are painted. Unfortunately, while trying to lay a wash in around the doors, I screwed up the white walls, so I have to mask and repaint once everything is good and dry

Man, that is so stinking cool looking! I guess you'll be adding a tiny crew to the ship? I like the eye stalk idea too. Really, really well thought out stuff there, I'm impressed to no end!

I have some 1/350 photoetched crew figures--they're flat, true, but I can bulk them out a bit with paint. Man, they're tiny.

Tonight I masked and repainted the white walls, and, despite the usual airbrush fiascoes it looks pretty good. Whew! Tamiya tape is the greatest masking tape in the world. The paint on Irving is taking its sweet time drying, so Project Eyestalks is on hold. And so, to fill in the empty, idle hours, I'm trimming and bending photoetched ladders and railings for the main decks. It's actually a lot of fun--which is good, 'cuz that's why I'm doing it. ;D

Claws piercing the metal of the boat? I was originally going to do that, but I needed to be able to take Irving ("Norman"? hmmmm ) on and off and on and off during the fitting process, and having his claws fit into the holes would have complicated that more than I wanted. Still bending, painting, and attaching photoetch. Geez, there's a lot of photoetch to be added. But it certainly makes a big difference in getting the thing to look real!

A brief progress report: I've been painting and painting and painting--and gluing more blasted photoetch ;D The photoetch is a pain, but it really perks up the model. This is how the project stands right now. The airship is about 80% done; all the masts are in place and rigged except for three at the aft end that "interact" with Irving (those three are just kinda set into place in the photos). All the railings are in place (finally; now if I can just keep from mooshing them with my big fat fingers ). I'm building little bits of clutter for the decks-winches, lockers, turntables to hold the dinghies. Irving now has eyes on stalks, huzzah. I've fit him into place on the airship and it's going to work just fine. Still to go: Some kind of base; the crewmen; some detail painting on Irving; perhaps a couple more cranes; a rudder actuator. Not too much, really; I'm getting there, slowly but surely. ;D ;D ;D Oh, yeah, the pictures:
