I build from piles of parts that I collect from here and there. Sometimes I'll get something that doesn't seem to fit anything, but it sticks out in my mind and I sort it with the rest of the stuff. Looking at it, I have no clue what I could possibly do with it...
But then, right in the middle of a build, that one, oddball, lone part, is the exact, right part for what I am working on, and it all makes sense.
Case in point... I am working on my contest entry last night, and I've been making good progress. I'm digging through my lighting bin, and run across a lone, massive, brass headlight from an antique car, or a fire engine, or a Stanley Steamer, or something, on a black headlight stand.
Alan gave it to me in a parts lot years ago, and I've contemplated chucking it more than once while "spring cleaning", but I've kept it.
And there it is... and the light bulb goes off, (pun intended) and it is the absolute perfect part for my current project... it now has a home, and I can finally answer the "what the heck am I going to do with that" question.
Funny how that works....

I know exactly what you mean brandon..i do the same thing. I have held onto scrap parts and "what-nots" for years, because out of the blue, one of those parts will pop into my memory while doing a build and when i need a part. It's ;ike once you look at these odd-ball parts, you never forget them, and it could be years later when you remember "hey, i have just the part that will work here...just gotta find it in my parts bin." I know exactly what you mean...we are like elephants, we never forget all the junk we have piled away....lol

My only problem is finding said part when I need it..... ;D Hell, I have so much stuff, I forget what I have until I move, or dig real deep in storage, then it's like Christmas all over again. That's when I ask myself......WHY?

That's funny... I was digging for something the other day and found a complete Cherry Bomb built up in a bag that I had totally forgotten about. It was like getting a new kit.

Similarly, I'll find one of those "perfect" parts when I need two and have no way of figuring where the dang thing came from. or find three when I need four...

John said it- "I have so much stuff..." So many boxes of parts/tires, engine and chassis parts packs- digging through them, Christmas indeed! Of course, when you want to find one particular thing- ha!

Yes.. The infamous disappearing parts when you need them epidemic..LOL I know what you guys are saying. You know you have the part but when you look for it,... it moves. I think the boxes and bags of parts have something in for us hoarders of parts.. Hide when they see us coming just by reading the minds.. I just got one in a box of parts this weekend. looks like a small tiled floor section with the base of a world globe stand. Says Revell inc. 1958 on the piece...Hmmm Don't know....

I'm with ya on the bins... But sometimes I just have a part that I have no clue what I could possibly use it for, and then all of a sudden, there is nothing else that would fit any better. I save all kinds of brackets and frame stuff, and interesting shapes.. but this particular single headlight thingy that I've had for years... it just clicked today. I couldn't have found a better spot for it if I tried, nor could I have seen where it was going to go when I got it. Puzzle pieces...

AAAHHH!! Yes, the old "where did I leave that part", !! I have so much parts in old boxes and cigar boxes and model kit boxes that I never know where I have anything anymore!! The other day I was looking for my model saw and found an old ,dusty 1/24 LOTUS slotcar with rusted chassis and motor !! I forgot about the model whacking and started on the slot car de-rusting!! Then the other day I found an old Aurora dragster (four banger) !! My tool shed now looks like an old antique hobby shop, but unorganized!!

Interesting thread and timing. When i built my Metro, some 20 years ago now, I made several parts, several times, working towards that "perfect" size and fit. I made two fuel tanks, the first being just a little too big. There really wan't anything wrong with it other than it just being too large for the job at hand. So, it was tossed into a parts box and I made a similer one a little smaller, and it in turn, found it's home in the Metro trunk. So, fast forward twenty years, while building the "Veloci-Tee", I noticed it needed a fuel tank and it had a 'just right' looking spot underneath. A trip back to the old parts box netted one 20 year old custom fabbed fuel tank ready to fill a void!

I've still got the chassis plate, hood with huge hole cut in it and part of a quarter panel of a Mission Impossible 69 Dodge convertible my father bought me on a trip to Fort Boonesborough in Kentucky when I was a kid. What happened was on the way back, my father's 68 Pontiac Lemans Sport 4 door had a wheel bearing go bad. Dad found a garage and while we were waiting for it to be repaired, we found the Mission Impossible kit in a local dept store. That kept me quiet on the way home. I gluebombed and spray painted it unmercifully at first, then later it got busted up. I found all the pieces and glued it once more, then it got shattered a 2nd time. All I have left now is the above mentioned pieces....sigh.
