A while back I showed some pictures of a no name die cast 1/18 Volkswagen I reworked into an interpretation of the classic Hot Wheels "Evil Weevil" I made some 6 years ago. Since the Hot Wheels Nationals was going to be in town, I wanted to give the old bug a freash look. Unfortunately, while removing a graphic from a door, I ripped a chunk of paint off clear down to primer. Knowing I'd never match the 6 year old candy magenta over silver worth a hoot, I decided a complete recolor was in line. I was never THAT happy with the dark magenta anyway. Fixed the door booger and got out a brand new can or the Testors laquaer, I'd been wanting to try it out anyway... Tore the bug apart and gave it all a complete going over with a sheet of 600, then 800 and lastly, 1000. Got it good and slick... I wanted it to have the same 'feel' to it as an early 70's Hot Wheels "Spoiler", that meant a big gumball and number on the door. It's the 10th Hot Wheels Nationals, in 2010, so a "10" sounded as good as any. The gumball was made with stencils I cut on my plotter. I shot the doors white, put on the first mask and shot them black. Layed a second round mask over the whole thing and started shooting the green. Once I was happy with the color I shot a few coats of clear on, sanding the doors between coats so the gumball has no edges. The Redlines were also made on the plotter, a must have feature! The effort paid off with a First Place, Large Scale in the custom compitition!

Mike, I remember your first post of this beauty a while ago. ;D Hard to believe it could be improved upon. but the color/red lines/door number are outstanding. I've said it before, I just love these scaled up versions of Hot Wheels. Gerry G

I'll say it paid off. The first version looked great, but the second is over the top. The red lines are fantastic. It is a Big Hotwheel.
