This is a set of chassis for the bah-humbug/bugbomb kits. The center one is a scratch build I made out of sheet styrene. I laid the originals on their side and traced out a pattern. Did that for all the sections off the chassis, cut the patterns out with scissors and glued it together. Instant classic hard to find deals chassis. Added styrene tubes for the axles. Next is the 57 Chevy, cut down to allow the wheels to be tucked in like the box art. Not a big fan of the original front suspension either. I was afraid to try this until reading the cool article here by Michael Curry. I chose to use the stock chassis, hack it up and drill some holes. I really like the look of this kit now. Don't mind the dust!! Lastly, my Super Spurt restoration. Standard build, 99% stock.

Good thinking there. Looking forward to see the 57 done. I think they look a lot better with the wheels tucked away as well. Keep us posted.

I couldn't agree more about the Deals '57. I think they look way better down low, the only up high '57 i've really liked is Rob Riley's. Here's a couple I picked up on the net, that are just too sweet....

RatRod! You found some great examples! I am ready to cut into my 57 now! I love the way they returned eth grill and bumper to "original". I just adore these two builds as well as your in progress one, f91!
As for the ten rules, yeah, those are the exact reason I never finish one! I get too into the detail and changes, then nada!
Get 'er done, f91!!

f91, nice projects! Did you have to cut down the 57 tires? I tucked the tires on the below Deal's Wheels "tribute" (basically a Zzzzz-28 with a chopped up Cougar body on it) and even after cutting down the tires the chassis had to be radically narrowed to the point that the tires were less than an inch apart. Here's a couple I picked up on the net, that are just too sweet.... Those are quite nice! Looking at that first pic you can just see Mike Curry's blue '57 to the left in the shot, so I bet Mike did these two as well.

Love all the variations ;D but it is a caricature car....no ?

Tres- the Tires are stock, but glued directly together, no axles.
Don- Yep, Caricature cars that I would prefer look closer to the box art that the artist created.

It's a steamroller, eh? Don, even though they're caricatures I've heard a lot of people say they don't like the tires sticking out so far on the "stock" kits. Personally it doesn't bother me, but for some it's a real sticking point. And hey, what fun would it be if everyone built their models exactly the same, even if they are caricature models

Did that for all the sections off the chassis, cut the patterns out with scissors and glued it together. Instant classic hard to find deals chassis. Added styrene tubes for the axles. Dumb (or perhaps pushy?) question: any chance you'd care to share those chassis tracings you made? (Please!?) I for one don't hold out much hope of running across enough original Deal's Wheels bug body or detail parts to make a kit out of them ... but I'm curious how the proportions and such (on the original DW bug kits) compares to, say, the Volkswagen Van kit -- which I can actually obtain; in my lifetime, and on my budget. A set of chassis tracings, made from DW bug parts, would help to answer most of my questions about those measurements. Oh, and: some very nifty builds you have going there! ;-)

Wardster- Heck yes, I'll share them. Give me a day or two and I'll scan some tracings. It was really easy to do. If I could get someone to cast a bug bomb body, I'd loan mine out for it too.

Wardster- Heck yes, I'll share them. Give me a day or two and I'll scan some tracings. It was really easy to do. If I could get someone to cast a bug bomb body, I'd loan mine out for it too. That's awesome of you! Thanks for your willingness to share those drawings. Much appreciated! As to the casting work -- also quite cool of you to offer! I'll leave casting work to others, but once I am done with the (several, simultaneous) deadlines I have going for "Sci-Fi & Fantasy Modeller" out of England -- say, early to mid June? -- I would really love to start playing more with Deal's Wheels car and plane projects, for a while. One reason I'm curious about the drawings of the chassis is that I've often wondered what a New Beetle body style would look like, 'tooned up with Deal's Wheels proportions and outlines. That's one big reason I'm wanting to see the drawings of Deal's work on the original Beetles. Those drawings would be a good study-start on a set of drawings for a New Beetle body -- made, perhaps, to fit a modded VW Van's parts? Don't know the exact details yet -- just thinking out loud. As far as that study would go: having one of the original bodies (or an undistorted copy of same) to study would allow me to get the outlines and proportions as correct as possible -- so, if that Bug Bomb body does get cast up, I'd like to get a copy to study. But as I say ... it'd be another month before I could "get serious". Too many irons currently in the fire for me to jump into this ... but it feels like a project I'd like to play with, when time clears up. Thanks again for your willingness to share drawings and such! -- Ward Shrake --

Ward- No problem. This board has a lot of people willing to help out and I want to do my share. What kind of Scifi projects are you working on? I've done a few over the years.

Ward- No problem. This board has a lot of people willing to help out and I want to do my share. Coolness! I was fairly active here, back around 2007, but lack the time to do much but lurk here, from time to time, these days -- but, yeah, I was well aware of how cool this place is! :-) What kind of Scifi projects are you working on? I've done a few over the years. Two of the in-progress ones are showrod-related: Silhouette's, turned into cop cars. One fairly "plain" and one that's a bit fancier, paint-wise. Or at least that's the plan: I haven't finished either one, yet. (Close, but.) I'm trying to also finish off two other projects -- both scratchbuilt vehicles -- at the same time ... all with a deadline of basically days, maybe weeks from now. So ... if I "go quiet" until those deadlines are met, don't take it as a lack of interest on my part. Just gotta stay busy, thrashing. ;-) The project that just wound up was a rebuild of a classic (era) kit: the Maximillian robot from Disney's 70s Black Hole movie. The big deal there not being so much taking apart a kit that was already built, as repairing a kit after the post office tosses it over a six-foot fence, and fed it to my dog. Loads of fun, fixing that! I think that one's out in most stores that carry that book, by now. It was in the 17th issue of "Sci-Fi & Fantasy Modeller". CultTVman and FabGearUSA ought to carry copies, if anyone's interested; and SF&FM has a nice web site with many previews of books. Anyway ... thanks for asking ... and I'll get back on this V'dub subject, as soon as my schedule lets me play with all that! I'm enjoying the ones I'm working on, now ... but can't wait to play with some Deal's Wheels "unfinished's" on my "one day" pile.

Here's a couple I picked up on the net, that are just too sweet.... Those two were built by Michael Curry in San Francisco. He does SUPER nice work on all his builds. I wish the pictures were clearer, because the models are beautiful. I especially love the Gomad with that bronze paint and the Cragar S/S mags. The front bumpers on those actually started as AMT stock '57 bumpers. He cut them all apart and shrunk them, then smoothed them up and sent them out for replating. They look like kit parts! Michael's pro-street Deal Super Spurt is on page 65 of the Scale Auto 2008 Contest Cars issue. Brian

It's pretty awesome that they would include a 'tooned car in the contest cars issue. Guess I'll have to go seek that issue out! (Love what I've seen of those issues, but have been too busy catching up on other periodicals -- collection building, I mean, in various scale modeling genres -- to have made getting those a priority ... thus far. But I'll have to move them up a notch, now.)
Also: a non-modeling buddy, from out of town, saw those two pics of Michael's builds, above. First one got a "Nice!" and the second pic got a "Sweet!" ... and yeah, Mr. Curry's builds always are, from what I've seen of them (here and on the Deal's Wheels web site). Wish he'd send more images to Tres, for uploading!
Is it my imagination, by the way, or is that a Nitrous bottle in the back of the Nomad? Along with a tiny model of an older car?

Yeah, iirc, there's a nitrous bottle and "model" car in back of the Nomad. He added all sorts of things to the interior.

Hey Tres,
Thanks for the update on Michael. I had emailed him a week or two ago and never got a reply. Guess that's why. I wish him a speedy recovery....and his build ups are fantastic. I think he is a verifiable DW guy! Keep us posted on his recovery.
