Myself, I like the Horn Toad better than the Rattler--seems like a purer design, whereas the rattler seems like a kludge to me. But both of yours look very nice!

WOW!!! I'm not familiar enough with these kits to know what tweaking you've done, but they both look fantastic!! Beautiful work! Those matching color insets on the wheels had to take a steady hand

Love the Horn Toad, hate the Rattler. Your workmanship is beautiful on both however. So far as I can recall, that is the nicest build of a Horn Toad I've ever seen.

First of all you did a very fine job on these builds. As Tory said it the best build of the Horned Toad I have ever seen as well!!
I like the changes you made. weren't there originally the wide steam roller type tires on the Toad?
I like the design of the Toad much more than the Rattler....however I'd buy either or both if re-released.

I'm with the majority here, love the Horn Toad, but never really cared for the Rattler. (mainly because that's what they did to the HT, and why we may never see it again) Both builds are super, but I have always had a soft spot for the big tired Horn Toad better.www.showrods.com/showrod_pages/horn_toad.html

I LOVE 'em BOTH!! Those are both beautiful builds! I've never seen the Rattler before (other than pictures of the box in the Showroom) so it's neat to see it. I'm not crazy about the "Rattler" theme, but I like the roof, windshield and fenders, and I can see it being a cool showrod delivery. Nice job! Brian

That variation of the Horn Toad is the last built TD model saved from my younger day. Neat to see it so cleanly built.

Very cool builds, I wish they would reissue the Horn Toad . Just a few more examples of rare TD's that almost everyone (at least herein) would love to snag... sniff Great work om all three by the way, but the save job on the green Horn Toad is my favorite. Gerry G

I wasn’t too keen on the Horn Toad before I started to build it but I like the smaller TD kits and as this is one of them it steadily grew on me. The engine is really great. It is described as a ‘potent Pontiac mill’ with 6 cylinders – does such an engine actually exist?
I was lucky to get these three kits for very reasonable amounts on ebay. They were mostly damaged or partially built glue bombs that came apart very nicely. The Rattler was mostly unassembled but was listed together with a Stinger and a Sand Shark that had been stored in a flooded basement. The seller had provided photographs only of the boxes which looked like Ace Ventura had been at them and then flushed them down a toilet, so they attracted few bids. My friend Keith (eggzilla) kindly bid on it for me as this was another one of the increasing number of auctions which are not open to bidders outside the US - why?? All three came in for about $70. Restoring the decals was tricky but with patience I got them off the paper and thanks to Micro-Sol they went onto the kit but they don’t look as good or as glossy as unspoilt decals. The original Horn Toad was a partial glue bomb which luckily had not been painted and flew under the radar for $55. The reissued Horn Toad came from Yahoo Japan for $40 and was mint in box, which goes to show that even I get lucky sometimes!
I have one more restoration project original Horn Toad for which I want to improve the front axle to make it less toy like. It would be nice to give it some disk brakes. I do not have decals for this one and the ones I got from Model Express are not good. They appear to be scans. Whatever happened to Decal Dan? Where is he when you need him? I have another ‘builder’ Rattler. It might look better without the wing on the roof, the snake tongue and the snake decal with the goofy eyes. I wonder what design Tom Daniel had proposed for this reissue. I understand from the literature that he was involved in the reissuing of the Horn Toad as Rattler, Dragon Wagon as Hangman, Trick T as Stinger and Dog Catcher as Sand Shark - the aptly named ‘Evil Rods’ – and provided artwork for the decals. It would be great if he could participate in this forum in a similar way to what Moebius’s David Metzner does at Hobby Talk.
Tory – I am glad I could provide some inspiration as you have provided so much to me. Your Lil Coffin and Ice Cream truck inspired me to build these kits but I got hopelessly stuck by the fiddly nature and quality of these kits and eventually totally blocked when I compared the kits to the few original photographs I could find on the net. I planned a number of ‘corrections’ all of which I have found difficult to execute. The obstacles to completion for the Ice Cream Truck are the window, which is much smaller in photographs, and the pin striping - how did you do it?? For the Lil Coffin it’s the engine. I am trying to find better air cleaners than the ones in the kit, which are horrible, but I am confused about the engine plumbing. In photographs of the original Lil Coffin the engine has pulleys and fan belt but later photographs and the kit show it without this feature, so I am not sure which way to go. The restored Lil Coffin only creates more confusion!
I hope Revell bring the Horn Toad back soon. I would like to see the look on the faces of all those ‘collectors’, investors or whatever they are called, who got their 'mint in sealed box' Horn Toads on ebay for $500+ just to gather dust in the attic! ;D

Here is Tom Daniel's artwork for the Sand Shark: As you know, here's what Monogram went with: Tom's artwork is much nicer. It looks a lot better without the goofy shark fins. Does anyone have a better picture of it or of any of the other proposed artwork? Could Tom post some of it here? It might make a nice subject for a competition - "build them as Tom intended".

Cool!! Thanks for posting that picture of the artwork for the Sand Shark. I had read Tom's comments about that kit on his website and wondered what his original ideas were. The car as shown in the illustration would certainly be feasible, and I like the colors and graphics. I, too, would love to see more of Tom's proposals for other kits if they differed from the final product.
Keep up the great restoration work, Luca!

Oh, and yes, the six-cylinder engine in the Horn Toad and Rattler kits is a Pontiac Overhead Cam 6 that was offered in Tempests and Firebirds in the late sixties. A stock version is in the AMT/MPC '69 Firebird 400 and Trans Am kits. For the TD kits, the engine was leaned over and the Webber carbs and wild exhaust were added.
