Okay, so I've been using Squadron Green Putty for years. As a matter of fact, my half-empty tube has been around longer than I've had hair on my chestnuts, but it's just not doing it for me anymore. What's the BEST plastic putty out there now? And, why is it the best?

I'm in the same boat as you, I have used the green putty for many years. It has its limits, but works for what I do .

Well Keith / Don .. I know this subject has came up in the past but I swear by 3M Green Polyester (fine) Spot Putty ... zero shrinkage and it sands great ... It comes in a heavty tube that's been lurking ion my model bench for many moons ... great stuff.. 3M part#05960 about $24.00 for a pound tube ... no mixing just squirt and spread ..

I agree with Chuck on the 3M polyester. I also use the 3M red glazing putty for small stuff.

I have a rather dumb question: If you're using the red or green putties, how do you handle color bleed-through? I used to use Squadron Green putty and had lots of trouble with the color coming through my primer. Now I use Squadron White or Evercoat Eurosoft.

You have tubes sitting around for years? ? ? ? ? You guys need to do some WILDER CUSTOMS . . . . ;D I go through a tube a project. . . .hehehe I might have to try the 3M product on the next one.
What are you going to build that you need it?

Gary -I've experienced zero bleed through with 3-M ... and D.B. the tube is 1 pound 5oz. of putty ... I've had customs done 10+ years that show no sign of shrinkage or bleed through..

Ditto for me. I've had no bleed through with 3M.

I'm pretty much an Evercoat user myself, but might have to try the 3M stuff for those times that I need a skim coat, and don't want to mix a two part bondo. If Chuck says it's good, then it must be good.... ;D I can tell you that Squadron is shrinkable garbage!!!

I basically use it for seams and holes to get a smooth finish before I prime. I have never had any problems with bleed through using the Squadron Green Putty. And yeah, the stuff does shrink and I'm tired of having to sand and refill 2 or 3 times on something that should have been done in one coat. I'm going to try some of the Chuckster's 3M and see how I like it. Like you said, if Chuck said it's good, who am I to doubt his word!

I'll say this, I've got twenty plus year old builds with Squadron putty and shrinkage IS, without a doubt, a problem. I've been using 3M red cap since I've restarted building just over a year or two ago. Can' speak for long term, but it's been working great so far.

I've used the 3M putty for years on full size vehicles. The only thing you really have to be careful on models is not too get too much on at one time or the solvent in it may over react with the plastic. However, if you put it on with not too thick coats, it's pretty forgiving stuff and sands good. I do prefer to wet sand with it because the sandpaper lasts longer before getting clogged. I use either the Acryl Blue or Green generally.
