I have a couple of kids, but my middle boy is really into models. At our house Santa brings one big gift and we give all the rest. This year he gets hooked up.
He builds with me at the table. He will stay on task long after the other kids have wandered off, and he is a great problem solver. He's only 7, but he wants to stuff bigger motors and slicks on everything he builds. He always asks me for parts and I dig through my nuts and bolts bin sorters that I have and I share my stuff with him... I figure I'm not ever going to use ALL of my stuff. He's been using the glue, and I let him use paint pens and supervise him with a hobby knife. He sands stuff, and asks me to dremel out wheel wells and stuff. It's pretty cool.
THIS year he gets his own hobby stuff. I've stuffed a huge box with a nuts and bolts organizer like mine, a drop cloth, a new knife, a razor saw, glue, a pack of paint pens, some acrylic paints with brushes, and four models. I bought him a rig, a Revell chopper, the black Badman '55, and a Z/28 with extra parts for his bins.
I've built all of these and know that they are on his skill level and make pretty solid models when finished, unlike a Revell Beatnik Bandit or something...
I tell ya, when I was a kid I got tons of models for gifts, I was easy to shop for, and that rectangle box with that familiar rattle wound me up with excitement. I am soo excited for him to open this box... It's going to be awesome.

That's awesome Brandon! I'm trying to get my son jackson into building, but he just doesn't have the patience yet. he is very artistic and he is a gear head, but he just needs to slow down a little bit...he gets in too much of a hurry.

great story Brandon, I build with my 6 year old grandson as well. he also is getting a big rig, a slammer and a police car. some paint and glue.
It a lot of fun watching them figure thing out and all the questions on how and what should something be painted.
