I went to the model show yesterday and it just did not interest me like it used to. I thought going to the show would get me stoked and I would buy something, jump into a build or something. But unfortunately it did not. I found myself with more questions than anything. For some reason I am lost as to why I am building any more. I love the cars, the detail and all but cant for the life of me find out why I am not as interested as I used to be. Maybe it is because I have a lot going on in my life and dont have the time. Or maybe it is time to take a break and do something else for a while. Has anyone else found themselves in this situation? Have you ever had the feeling you should not be in the hobby? I am lost with a lot of questions and I guess I am the only one with the answers. I just wish they would come soon so I could explain to myself what is going on.

I think you may suffer from a form of "Writers block", or should we call it "builders block". You seem to still love the cars and models but something is blocking the building motivation. This is something all of us have been thru at some point in our lives. It sounds like you have a lot of personal things going on and they are filling your thoughts for now which is forming that block. Once you get your personal things sorted out and your mind is free maybe you will get back into it again. Maybe you need a hiatus from models at this point in your life. I wouldn't say it is a permanent thing as models are and were a big part of your life and that is difficult to abandon. Quite possibly you need a break.
Just take it one step at a time. I hope you don't give up the hobby permanently.

As you say .. you like cars , detail, building and such .. you went to a model show .. so there's still interest only thing is it's not high on your priority list with everything going on in your life .. maybe things will swing in your favor when things settle down ..

You might try switching genres. Pick up a cheap Monogram tank kit, or one of the new Pegasus Space Arks, and try that instead of a car. I know when I began to burn out on cars, I started to gradually drift over into sci-fi and girl figures, regained my enthusiasm, and now I hardly do anything else. (The wife gets a veto vote on the girlie figures, though: "Happy wife = Happy life" )

I have been waiting for a model show in my area forever. They have one this weekend and what happens? I can't get geared up enough to go see them. My fault at that point.
My wife sees me open kit after kit. I get the body and wheels set up and then stop cold. I kid you not. I have a bunch that just need this or that to finish yet I can't get myself fired up enough to finish the darn things. But like these guys say, stop and relax and maybe things will get moving again. I have been buying little stuff here and there but have yet to get motivated enough to build an entire car. The interest is there, just not the needed motivation. I wish there was a model club nearby. I think hanging with some like-minded car guys would help.
Problem with me is I start changing stuff here and there and then I am never happy with the results. Maybe too much pressure. I have no idea. I even bought cars that I thought would not be able to be changed. What happens? Knife comes out and here we go again.
Sorry for the rambling. It's just this happens to me ALL THE TIME! It took everything I had to go through the Paddy Wagon build without messing with fuzzy fur and wiring and bare metal foiling, etc. I just opened another 36 Ford coupe and still haven't finished the last one. The 40 Ford I worked on which included that red/white striped interior is stuck as well. I chopped the top and cut the chassis all to bits and redid it to lower the car. Then, I stopped!
I think I need medical help!!
Good luck!

I am still interested in kits, building, designing and details. But I think for me it is more the need for something different. Not a different type of kit and such but more the making of something different. Something that has not been done before. I like 1/8 scale kits more than anything. Dont shoot me yet. But there is not that many kits out there to build (unless you have $1000+). You can only build a T Bucket so many times. I would like to see more kits out there like say a 1/8 Drag-U-La, Lil Coffin, Boot Hill, and the list goes on. I am more interested in the making and designing of something new. Not the building. The building will come I am sure of it. I am having problems with the attitudes of the people at the show. I went not feeling it yesterday and I guess I had my eyes open this time to see it. But things just seem to be going down hill these past few years. I know modeling is a dying hobby but the way 95% of the people were is really not necessary. It may just be the way the world is falling apart (money wise) but it just seemed colder this year as far as the attitudes. It may just be me these days. Thanks for letting me ramble.

But things just seem to be going down hill these past few years. I hate to have to agree, but for some reason people's attitudes are wack at the shows. It will pull you down, espescially if you are not a super-detailer or are creative. Admittedly the bulk of the hobby is made up of a bunch of nerds. We all are in a sense. It's a very solo hobby outside of a model club meeting and a message board, and there is a lot of insecurity and lack of proper human interaction. A model car show and a real car show are two worlds apart. Even in CA where show roddy stuff is kind of accepted, it is still hard to get over some of the people's attitudes. Snarky comes to mind. It's worse here, but it is the only place we can gather, and the swap meets are always fun. The good thing about models is that they don't get rusty or full of leaves and dust like a real car if you stuff them away for a year or three. Maybe trim your stuff back to what you really want and take a break. I am also at the point where if it isn't something new that winds me up, I'm just not digging it. I built sooo many models as a kid, everything is just parts. I want that fire of inspiration and that high of the hacking and fabrication and ah-has! of dropping just the right part into place and staying up until 2am working on something. Sometimes I'm just tapped and nothing stokes my brain. Things stay in the closet and when the mood hits they are there.

I have been thinning back the lot and keeping the stuff that I know I will build sooner or latter. The only problem with that is the low ballers. Some one knows you paid good money for something and they want to give you a quarter of the worth for it. Some even want it at a 1/4 with free shipping. WOW. I found it hard to converse with people Saturday. It has been bugging me all day today. I just had to spill it here. Saturday was just full of people with bad attitudes and snide remarks. I was just contemplating the whole situation and find myself at a cross road. I have come to the conclusion that I am going to stop for a long sabbatical and see what comes of it. A plastic fasting if you will. Trim the fat. Ken...

I did find interest in something at the show. I just remembered. Eggplanes. Could not find one in all those kits. Dont ask me why I like them. That is another unanswered question of the day.

Saturday was just full of people with bad attitudes and snide remarks. What does give people the right to act like jack-asses at a model show, anyways? I've had things said to me, and heard things said that I would never say to another human being... You'd think that everybody was there to "promote the goodwill of model building" like they claim, but few really are when it comes to interacting with people outside of their little groups... Like they have some right to be a jerk... I don't get it. The last few shows I've been to brought me down, also... People should think before they speak and decide if somebody was telling them what they are going to say if it would offend.

I appreciate all building types like Tanks, Planes, Cars, 18 Wheelers and such. I dont look down on any of them. But when it comes to others and their preferred build type they just have smart asss comments. At the shows here there are more tank and plane guys than anything. It is an Air Force city. I even talked to a few well mannered people. Flirted with a few wives (like we all dont). But the better part of the day was a downer. That being said I am going to save myself the headache next year and stay home. No more shows for a few years for me. Unless I make it to Japan like we are planning. Then who cares. I wont understand them any how. Plus I can get my fill on the Eggplanes. Dont ask me why the sudden interest in them. I seen a built one and there I go. Ken...

The last "official" contest I did with a bunch of friends was probably about 15 years ago, or close to it...
A bunch of us road down to West Palm Beach, and we took a ton of builds with us covering a wide variety of subjects. One thing we did have was a load of Tom Daniel builds. After setting up and being scorned by some of the locals for those "showrod thingies" we hit the road to peruse the local hobby shops and get some lunch. We chowed on some Mexican food and got back to basically spend the rest of the day farting on each other and cutting up. LOL. We also got to hang out with Augie Hiscano, (didn't fart on him!), and we met our buddy Hale and Sonny DePalma for the first time as well. These are friends we have kept all these years, other than losing Augie a few short months after that. He left a huge impression on all of us though, as a builder AND incredibly nice human being.
Despite all our showrod thingies, which drew a large crowd all day long, we won a ton of awards. The best re-ward was kids loving the TD kits, and hearing some of the parents saying "I had that when I was a kid!" It wasn't the awards, (which totally SUCKED by the way! LOL!), it was the comradery we had as friends. It was great.
One thing we did get to witness was this guy with a large scale Tamiya Formula 1 car, who thought he owned the show, pitching a complete sh*t fit after NOT winning anything! We got a kick out of it, but he was screaming all the way out of the building, it was an embarrassment to anyone who builds. Lot's of pretty wires do not a best-of-show make.
That was the last time I went to a contest. It wasn't long after, we started doing the on-line contests here, and it's been a hoot ever since. Don't build models for contests, build them for yourselves and your friends to enjoy.
