I was working on my contest entries, and I was having fun. I really enjoy the mockup phase, the solutions to the questions that I create, the chasing down of parts through my bins, but the wheels and tires... I really, really dig dialing those in. I am a wheel and tire freak. That's my favorite part. The entire car is carried on the right wheel and tire selection, and I will spend hours sifting through my tires and rims, and hammering out backspacing or sanding tread.
After that, I really enjoy picking out the engine stuff... or engines as the case may be in most of my stuff.. they are free and require no tuning, why not have more than one? LOL. ;D
What is YOUR favorite part of a build? Paint? Engine? Detailing? Interior?

The initial idea. Opening the box for the first time is a biggy too. That can influence the initial idea.

The configuring and fabrication. Figuring out what it should look like, what should go where and building little brackets, making sure everything goes together juuuuussst right. My least favorite? Sanding, followed closely by painting.

Id say the final part of the painting, after the tape is off, and now you can get an idea of the models look when its done.

Never saying never.....I generally do not build outside of the box but I do enjoy adding 1 or 2 non-kit supplied things to make it my own... I think the color choice is most difficult for me to decide therefore I end up spending more time determining that.. Kind of a bitter sweet thing as I DO like pondering the entire build but spending the extra time deciding on the body color.. But I think my most favorite part is trying to come up with the couple little extra things that make it my own... Did this make any sense?.... Starry

For me it's definitely design and fabrication. I just love cutting stuff up and seeing if I can put it back together.

I love cutting up stuff as well.
The best part is mentally designing the build and creating all the pieces.

I really like cutting up car & truck bodies & putting them back together as new designs! I also like the challenge of trying to finish a new design. Started a new one last night...

PAINT, followed by tires/wheels, and engine. I love it when it all comes together and looks good.

I've always had a soft spot for part 24, but 37 is often my favorite. On occasion I really like 5 and 6 too. Seriously, paint is what I enjoy most. It is at that point that all the work done prior is either justified or not. And if the kit has decals I almost always enjoy applying them to the painted model as they give it detail and life.

Mine would have to be the mock up stage because that's when you can really get an idea of what needs to be tweaked and what you an add / remove. In my opinion, the mock up stage is when you can select the right engine and induction, as well as the wheels, tires and the stance. as brandon said, I too base a lot of my builds around the wheel & tires and the stance because the wheel & tire choice and the stance can make or break a build. (models or 1:1's). stance is the second most important thing to me, and then the engine choice and induction would be third. paint and stuff like that is just the icing on the cake, but without the right engine, wheels, tires and stance, the paint job isn't going to help. I have done entire builds based around a set of wheels and tires that i found in my parts box.

Ditto Rob! Definately the mock-up stage.

Hmmmmm, I love it all, but I guess mock-up, and scratch building all the little added details are the "favorite" part for me. I do however like painting too, and not to many will attest to that. Painting used to be the weakest link for me, but many years practice has changed that part.

Mocking up the finish, painting the body and adding little details to the interior and overall build that will set my version of the kit apart from others I've seen. The least favorite part would be the engine and suspension because I suck at engines and suspension because I always want it to be lower and I kick myself in the ass thinking"it could have sat closer to the ground".
