I heard about using wood stain over acrylic paint on figures to bring out the details in the skin and muscles . Has anyone heard of this or done it?

I have used oil based stains over Acrylics, but I sprayed a clear coat over the Acrylic Paint before applying the stain and sprayed clear again after the stain dried. You just brush it on and wipe off the excess stain with a towel.

Figure guys use thinned oil paint washes to do this, but they don't work with acrylic directly this way, they will build up with blocking sprays like Ira described. Washes behave completely different over flat and gloss, depends on what you want to do. They view the wash as part of the overall coloring process and might do several colors in different areas. Little bit at a time, sometimes with airbrush and so small a spray you hardly see anything going onto the model
Wood stain wouldn't be the ideal stuff to use for this under any circumstance.
If you do some research you can find tutorials for all this on line, or available on instructional dvd.
