I still buy, however I will never use eBay again to sell, too many crappy buyers that want everything they get for free by reporting their item as not delivered, by the way I always used tracking numbers, but eBay always sides with the buyers even when it's obvious they are lying

I haven't done any business with Ebay in over 2 years. The last time I sold, I was lucky that I did not receive any complaints. However, as a buyer, I did have one very sad/funny experience... I bought a 1/24th Chaparral toy from a lady in the U.S. She sent me an invoice the day the sale closed and I paid right away with Paypal. I also asked her for a shipping date so I would have an idea of when to expect my car. A week passed and I had no reply from her about the shipping date. I sent the message again and waited another week, still no answer. I sent a third message with the same request and again, no reply. By the third week, the car should have arrived, usual time from the U.S. to Canada is about 2 weeks. I sent a message to Ebay asking for them to verify that the car had been sent. A week later I heard from the lady...screaming at me in capital letters...telling me I should have been patient. I replied saying I had sent three messages and she didn't reply. She told me where to go and how to get there...on the Ebay message system. I complained to Ebay about the obscene language and her treatment of my purchase. A week later I got a letter from Ebay telling me that my money was being returned as the lady could not confirm she had sent the item. I was relieved and happy. Not quite done...about two weeks later I got a parcel in the mail...the Chaparral car I had bid on...in a package about two inches tall. When I opened it, the car was in the package and the footprint on the roof was obvious. The car was about 1/2 on an inch tall, squished by her foot. Even the man in the post office laughed when I told him the saga. I sent a photo to Ebay and suggested they post it for those who needed a laugh. They replied that the seller was banned from Ebay. That is the extreme. I hope your purchases go better. I now only buy or sell face to face, cash for product

Ebay could clean this up, but they don't want to get involved where they need to. Right now Ebay is full of scammer seller AND scammer buyers, all the changes intended by Ebay to "make it a more secure environment" have mostly been about keeping information hidden to manipulate the environment so neither sellers or buyers can actually see anything going on, and thus they keep whats left of the "community" from working together and policing themselves. It is getting scarier and scarier for an honest seller to be interested in putting anything up for sale on Ebay.

Well, I'm on the other side of this. Ebay has kept me fed for the last 11 months. I know everyone has issues with ebay and paypal fees, but I can tell you the good out weighs the not so good.
True, you end up giving ebay close to 20% in fees. In fact, I was recently kicked off the "LSM" site because I had the audacity to challenge a 'regular' over there (Big Jimmy) constantly complaining about "Feebay" . (His cute little trash talk wordplay) Well, because I didn't blow smoke up his ass and actually went against his trash talking, I got booted. They have about 20 active members over there, so thats Big Jimmy Baby's clientel)
I hit 10 to 20 yard sales a week. So I know what yard sale prices are. I won't buy a 1/25th model for $10 at a yard sale. But I will buy one for a buck and flip it for 10 on ebay. I have over and over again. Though this year has been bad for models.
So that in mind, if I was to have a yard sale of my own, I would have about 50 - 100 visitors given my location. If I put a model on ebay for $10, I expect 100-1000 page hits. If I have a model on a table at a yard sale for $10, it will never sell. So when my ebay model sells for $10, $8 is mine (after fees). That's 5-7 dollars more than I would pocket at a yard sale.
There are never bidder wars at a yard sale. And we all know how much fun they can be.
I have had one altercation with ebay this year involving Valerie Harrell. I listed a set of Fred Cady Dick Harrell decals and Ms. Harrell reported me to ebay for violating her VERO rights ownership. Ebay yanked the listing, and slapped my hand, but that also dinged my Trusted Seller status.
Ebay couldn't tell me WHY but recommended I contact Ms. Harrell. Ms. Harrell repeatedly ignored my emails until I challenged ebay and plead my case that she refused to communicate with me. They finally got her to respond I guess because I got a one line email from her stating "Dick Harrell is a registered trademark"
That may well be NOW, but it WASN'T when Fred Cady made these decals, but ebay wasn't concerned with that fact and didn't want to get into a p!ssing contest with her. They were going by their rules and adhering to the VERO regulations.
I could complain about ebay if I was Big Jimmy Boy, but my issue is actually with that ho-bag not contacting me directly. Instead she just pulled her trigger and defended her dead daddy and the royaly money she gets anytime anyone ever utters Dick Harrell. She's not very supportive of the fans that supported her father.
So, unlike that other message board, I'll let the venting continue here for or against ebay as long as it doesn't get out of hand.
and Valerie can kiss my ass

Paul you are right about the number of buyers and the exposure, consistently Ebay will deliver the 2 or 3 people it takes to get something bid to maximum value, and I see a lot of the high value bidding coming back on the not-so-common stuff. I am still very concerned that the environment has significantly deteriorated while the cost has multiplied and the changes made haven't done much to make things better.
My recent story concerns a vintage model box that I bought with the "mint" description and one picture of the top. On arrival, one whole side was spray painted, I offered to make a reasonable settlement, but was blasted by the seller and turned down. So then, per the Ebay procedures, I get into a long back and forth with the seller who tries every dodge, delay and lie possible, ultimately being forced by Ebay to take a return, post paid, refund my price, and refund my shipping. Six months later, guess what. same box listed by the same seller, exactly the same way, even used the first auction's photo and language all over again and I am blocked from seller's communication. I contact Ebay to notify them, revive the old case info, bring this all to their attention and the auction goes on anyway. Lying, cheating seller and no attempt to do anything.
There are dozens of ways to bring this kind of stuff to a halt, same goes for scam buyers that hose sellers repeatedly, lying about what was received. Problem is most of these solutions cost Ebay more than they spend now, open info up so buyers and sellers can see each other clearly, and would end up raising their costs and reducing some percentage of auctions that shouldn't be run.
That being said there aren't a lot of alternatives, nothing else has the same level of exposure or brings the highest return, unfortunately I also think raising value charged to the breaking point (where it is now) and continuing to let this decline fester, with honest folks getting burned, will eventually result in a consequence, perhaps it is doing this already in ways we can't see.
I think the Ebay concept is wonderful, and up until it got Meg Whitman's influence it was a pretty cool place to be for both buyer and seller. Now, as a self aware monopoly whose interests always transcend both buyer and seller it is out of hand and needs to be split apart or to have a serious competitor so cost and customer focus can be brought back into balance.
