Was thinking about the drop off of contests on here the other day. As we move into the prime model building season was also thinking about getting input on this topic.
I really like the idea of a Tom-Daniel-style themed contest in the spring, ending say at the end of April, and at the end of October, the Halloween themed contest. Though I never managed to get my best intentions finished for either of these, they were a lot of fun. Would be nice to know these were coming each year, especially at the rate I get things done!
Of course contests need help with administration, judging, collecting the entry submissions, voting, posting the results, etc. We should be able to rotate these duties somehow among those who'd like to help. Also was thinking that instead of trying to manage the cost and issues with distributing real prizes maybe we just make up a good virtual trophy that could be attached to the bottom of your posts?
What do you guys think?

I was only able to get something completed for a couple of the contests , but I really liked the stuff that was created from everyone. I think the last contest here was the Car-toon theme .

They always seem like a good idea and then 75% or more don't finish in time.... Kinda not fun if everybody just wants to look...

Absolutely agree, the main reason for the idea of a fixed schedule with long notice, might not make a difference though. If we get any interest maybe we try this setup next year and if no one cares enough to enter then we can just forget it, we do have the project and finished project submissions after all.

Well, the best intentions don't always play out, but it's always worth a try! I would be happy to sponsor a contest with my model studio site, and donate some prizes as well. It never seems to be a problem getting prizes, Ira has always gifted us with some great vintage magazines, we've had kits, shirts, all kinds of detail items, etc; donated in the past. It generally gives the site a shot in the arm and "wakes up" some of those sleepy heads who have become sedentary at building and are content to look at builds on the internet all day! It's not that big of a deal to organize, I've done it several times, and could probably do it again for you. If you get an overall decision on theme/categories then we can start the planning asap. Put up a post just for that and see where it goes. Stick to the showrod based theme, no outside categories. The TD contests are generally good ones as well, but Wacky showrods makes for good themes as well. We always had box stock, modified, and total kitbash categories, covers a lot of territory with a lot of builders!

I'm kinda on board with Tim here . As long as it was a "Show vehicle " , great . Categorizing it into just one kind of a show car means you'll narrow it down to a select few who enjoy only one make

Hey Tim, you know what contest did well? The C's V's & T's contest. That really gave builders some options. Just bringing that back to the top as there were some really killer builds. Plus it sort of gave some direction as to what to build. The 275 was a good contest because you had that many options. The TD contest was good because it was based around TD kits. Anyway, I'll be hoping a contest comes out of this, the site could use some revitalization.

Yep, "C-Cabs", "Volks", and "T's" of all kind certainly covered a lot of territory! I know I haven't been here much in a few years, how bad is it? LOL! I see quite a few posts, but how many "builders" are really here?

Well... ... this place has probably changed a bit, but it's still a unique and a absolute great site. I do not know all the reasons why some "big stars" are out of this place, but that's what I find a little sad. Sure, life changes, and we change with... But I'm still here, several times a day, always looking for News and I also look at that old awesome stuff, we all have created over the years! Why I'm always here again? Because I build showrods... ... and because I love to see showrods... ... and because I admire the creativity that is shown here... ... and because I have found friends who understand what I'm doing... So, we have a new contest? I'm in!

.... i think a new contest is a great idea. ..........
I've actually built a couple models in the past few months, soo maybe I could actually "participate" this time, ....( no promises though ) ..... I get myself into trouble whenever I "promise" to build a model!!! ---I could get "on-board" with this though. I like the themes that have already been mentioned, but I think, I could be happy with most any theme. I think that "theme" is most important to the number of entries, meaning = the better the theme, = the more folks we could get to participate. I always liked the "TD" contest's. I think the "275" is good too, and the "C's, V's, and T's is a good idea too. ( again ) I think the theme should be in accordance with getting as many members to participate as possible. That is what makes a good contest, in my opinion. ....... GEEZ !! ,.. maybe even "AL" would/could enter something this time. ... WHOA !!
2 cents! ........... uh, ..

Well lets hammer out something simple and maybe start in December... and end in a month or two after that? I like the 275, box stock, modified, and kitbash. That's pretty much what this site is about and that's a wide open field of choices. Pick a show rod and go. I know everyone reading this has at least ONE kit in their stash they could at least build box stock.... there's no excuse with the 275. Let's get back to basics.

AJ, you too. or you'll have to turn your collection over to me. Sounds good Brandon. I've been looking for a reason to clear my table of non model related stuff and get back to finishing one of my projects. This seems like a good time to really dive back in. Let's see what we can brew up for a new twist on a contest maybe using everything from the past as inspiration. I was thinking about it and maybe something to the tune of a freestyle build without a theme so to speak but still remains within the confines of what the site represents. If I we were to have a dream contest on here, it'd be really cool to see it pass all previous and get more entries than we've ever had before. Something that would inspire all to participate. I for one admittedly never actually entered one so if I enter, I'd like to see others that haven't enter and just finish something no matter the quality, detail, and so forth. It'd be nice to revitalize the site as it's slowed down quite a bit. I haven't ran into anyone that I could bring in like I used to in the old days. Brandon, I could never hand over all these grails to you...LOL! It'd be the decline of the model world...ha ha ha! Not to mention you'd have an overload of what to do or what to build.

Once this is set, I'm going to commit and hope that others do to. I'm also going to do something that I haven't done before and plan my build which I'd encourage other that are unsure of entering to do as well. This means you Al...ha ha! I'm just going to figure out what I'm going to finish or build, set up my bench for that build and that's all I'm going to work on till it's done. Maybe this will be what I've always needed to rise to the builders like Tim, Brandon, Chuck, Bobby, Scott, and the countless others. There have been so many builders over the years that maybe we ought to have a Hall of Fame. Woah! I just got struck by an idea. What if we done a contest based on the showroom? Maybe there is something there. Tribute builds maybe? Inspired builds? Tribute or Inspired builds of your favorite built model or actual show car.

OK, now we are ramping up some energy! I think the open style contest is a great idea, I also like the idea of giving PLENTY of time for this. If we start now, lets plan for a finish in April of next year, gives 6 months, which should cover most of the slowest build rates, and on the other hand should produce lots of entries.
Name could be Showrods F/U ........ alright settle down, that's Freestyle Unlimited. Showrods of all types with some general class breaks as suggested. Seriously though, any name works! If this re-engagement contest works, lets see if we want to have another one finishing in October, maybe have that one tilted toward the Daniels/Monsters/Skeletons/Showrod Legends ideas.
I guess the other thing is how to engage volunteers so we don't just keep putting the work of these on the same few guys. I'm in for help, who else?

AJ if you actually built something I'd fall over. Let's do a 275 contest. Pick something from the list and go. I'll see if I can round up a celebrity judge or two to make things interesting but I don't want to round people up if nobody is going to step up and complete their builds. And I can assure you, AJ, that I'd find plenty of ways to bash all those grails. No problem at all.

OK, if this things has wings I promise:
- to build one of the 275 that (I'm 99.9% certain) has never appeared on this site in completed form, and - build it as near to box stock as my detail-hungry fingers will allow.
When I'll finish it is anyone's guess.
