How does one determine when a kit is done?

I say, it's done. Get away from it for a couple days, look at it. Maybe one more thing. Yup, that's it, just one more, well.

It is finished when it is packed up and on the way to a competition event. I like "happy" also.

I keep going back to my kits and building them better and better as my skills progress, on kit may seem perfect one day and the next I will have it torn apart for a rebuild

Hmm... When choosing (or designing) your model, you have to weigh the complexity of the build against the amount of time and resources you'll have to spend making it nice and smooth... When you are satisfied with the build? Well, sometimes you're satisfied with the result, sometimes not... Pick it up and have a nice long look at it, after all, there is no other like it... Displaying your completed masterpiece is also an important part of modeling... And then you see the reactions of other people and constructive opinions and reviews can help... But, I mean, constructive criticism, not just drivel... Sometimes a build is simply done. Point. You can do much more, improve it, refine it, beautify it... ... overdo it? But, it's all in the eye of the beholder... When you are happy, then just leave it as it is! The model you have just completed is a special, unique work of art... ... crafted with your own two hands...

I pretty much agree with you - I find most of the "is it done yet?" type thinking is in the planning and mocking up phase ("should I add a rocket launcher to this thing or no?) and then from there on it's all about painting and assembling ("is it painted yet? no? then paint it!") and as long as the assembly and paint goes to plan and to my satisfaction I'll call her done when I run out of things to paint or glue together!
