Hey guys, what paint can be used to simulate gold ( or brass) plating over a chromed part ? I think someone here had done it with some kind of Tamiya paint , but I cant find the post anymore. I'm trying to paint a Model T radiator shell .

I have been told that Mr Hobby paints does a brass but not over chrome as you have to buff it. Is there a gold foil?

There's a clear Amber that does an excellent job of replicating brass.. Just brush it over chrome and it looks great ..

I've used gold foil and the yellow clear Tamiya. The grille on this old build is Tamiya clear over Alclad.

I'm flying half blind here so forgive the bold type please. If you can't afford or don't want to pay the price for Alcladd or Spaz Stix, use suncatcher yellow. Years ago I wanted some gold on my chrome and thought I'd give it a try. I went to Wally world and bought a regular little $2 suncatcher kit. The water based paints all performed great, with the exception of the blue. The yellow made great gold plate, the red was perfect for tail lights and the purple and blue made for great tint visors on windshields. It's inexpensive, goes way farther than you think and can be brushed on. It won't leave brush marks and dries very thin. Give it a try, I know you'll love it.

I would have edited the first post, but all I could see was the reply button. If you get a set that has white paint, it will work for tire lettering and white walls too.

Tamiya clear yellow with a hint of clear orange will give you the brass look!

Thanks, I knew you guys would know ! I'm going to pick up both of the suggestions, and go with whichever looks closest to gold for me.

If you want to just go over the existing "chrome" on parts then, as mentioned, you need a transparent paint to tint the underlying "chrome" to a golden/brass tone. That is how the real model companies do their gold finished parts. Tamiya transparent acrylic paints are just the ticket. A mix of clear orange and yellow will give you that gold look. You can control the look by changing the proportion of yellow and orange. You can also add some colorless clear to lighten the tinting effect.
If you were to strip the parts and repaint them to look like gold or chrome, I would try Alclad II brass over a glossy undercoat. Come to think of it, the original "chrome" on parts is glossy so you could spray the Alclad II bras right over the factory plating.
