It's a terrible idea, is what it is. I wasn't a customer of theirs but I can see from the various forums that a LOT of people are affected, and not too happy with them right now.
Fotki has always served me VERY well though, for anyone looking for a photo host...

It's a terrible way of extorting money out of their customers, that's for sure

Gets better! I've had for a while the what is now the basic "pay" plan since 2002 for the extra storage (which I've paid with no problem). Now they tell me that all the basic "pay plan" provides is no ads, they say the expensive plan allows me to link photos. Bull! I've been sending many of my pics to my alternate e mail acct and sending the images to Cloud. I'll probably lose 4 to 5000 photos out of 8000 rather than pay ransom to them.
This is the reply I received from P.B. a few minutes ago at 4 pm est wtf!
Thanks for emailing us. Your images have been replaced with the “Look who’s popular” icon because you have used 100% of your bandwidth. Your account has been restricted for excessive usage and 3rd party hosting. In order to restore your account, please upgrade to a Plus 500 subscription @ $399.99
Please note that your bandwidth limit is not related to your photo storage limit – they are two different things. Your storage limit is related to how many images/videos you’re uploading to Photobucket.com. Your bandwidth limit gauges how many times someone has viewed your image.

You can remove this bandwidth cap by subscribing to a Plus 500 subscription. Plus 500 users get 500 GB of storage, unlimited linking, and unlimited 3rd party hosting benefits. ... And now its back to the hostage situation.... Man, it HAS to be illegal to take all our pics hostage like that. One thing is 3rd party hosting, but when we try to open our pics to download them, and they wont open, but we get a sign to pay up for 3rd party hosting - that is without a doubt blackmail. We can not get our pics back unless we pay the 400 bucks "for 3rd party hosting".... Yeah right...

I still have the same problem with my account. However, I found out that it's very easy to use Facebook as pic-host instead !

Take a look back at all the wonderful pictures on this forum that were once hosted at Photo Bucket... They are gone! That's the worst thing about this whole deal for me - they could have at least left the old stuff up. I guess business is business, but it's SUCH a shame that we lost so many great pics from here

I guess business is business, but it's SUCH a shame that we lost so many great pics from here Yeah, I agree. That is one of the worst things. They left SOOO many black holes on the internet. Thousands and thousands of forums, suddenly lost a major part of their pictures. But I think that there are one thing that is even worse. If you acces your PB account, and wants to open your pics to download them onto your own computer, it cant be done. I had a free account for years on PB, i have my OWN pics on there, and I want to download them to my OWN computer. But I cant do it. If I try to open a pic, I only got the sign that says, that I have to upgradde to be able to get 3 party hosting. Yeah okay, but I DONT want to pay them for third party hosting, so I just wants my pics out, but nope, I cant do that until I pay 400 dollars to get third party hosting. I cant find any other word for that, other than blackmail. Simple as that. They keep our pics hostage to make us pay 400 dollars for a product we dont want. Crooks....

If you join FOTKI through their "Photo Bucket Victims" link, click the link, enroll and give them your Photo Bucket I.D. and Password, Fotki will transfer all you photos to your Fotki account for free. No idea how they get around P.B. 's freeze, but it works. Cost for FOTKI for most is equal to 7 or 8 cups of coffee a year. . .$20. I found Fotki is forum user friendly and much easier the the bucket ever was.

If you solely depended on free PB account for storing the only copy of your photos then I feel really sorry for you. No backups? no 2nd copy? The $400 premium account is to allow for 3rd party hosting (which means serving those photos to other websites like this forum). That $400 is not needed for you to access your free account or even for downloading your pictured back to your computer. I have a free PB account and last week I logged in and I tried to download one of my albums - it worked just fine. It created a zip file with the pictures and saved it to my computer. There was no mention of needing to pay any money. PB still offers free (and low-cost) accounts for storing your photos and for viewing them on the PB site. Those accounts allow for uploads and downloads of photos.

Well, the pics I have on PB is not very very important to me. The most valuable pics i have on my computer also, but still I would like to have the pics from my PB account on my computer. I have tried a couple of times to download them, but it havent worked. I know other guys have the same problem, but I also know that some people dont have any problems at all, downloading their pics. Why its not the same for everyone, I dont know....

You can than open any of your photos as a guest and click and save to your computer. It worked for most of mine. Paul

Paul I've found that I couldn't download a whole album, but I could download them one-by-one. A pain, but I only needed to do it for some pics that were not handy on my present machine or external drive. Even if you're only seeing that dreaded gray dial they put up instead of your pic, download it anyway. It'll be your pic that downloads, not the dial.

The site got too janky and clogged with ads to work right.. I stopped using it, though most of my photos are still on there. I'm not paying for anything, especially $400. Their marketing people are not very good. And you can't give away something for free and then charge a ton later. I get that their storage space is expensive on their end, but they should have thought about that ten years ago.
The site doesn't work well enough for me to mess with it. It reminds me of being on dialup.
