Everybody has a few tools for building that they can't do without. For me I have four I'd be lost without. A pair of left and right 6 inch scales, A 1 inch Gyro cutter, a infinate anle cutter and my Duplicator cutting jig. I think the jig is one of my most used tools after the scales. Paul The "jig"

The Dremel & pin vise are two top ones for me.

Pin vice and drill bits, X-Acto knife, and I have a flat rectangle piece of abut 1/8" aluminum plate that I call the frame table. It keeps everything level during fabrication while allowing me to move it around the bench. Its really helpful in setting up suspension stuff.
I also have a small square block of wood I use as a cutting surface for the X-Acto knife and as a sand paper holder. I've had it for years... of course emery boards by the sleeve.
And masking tape... I use it to hold all kinds of things and for mockups. Couldn't build without it.

Ohhhhh, great topic!
My go to (in fact, the basic kit that I took on my trip that I'm on right now) tools are...
- X-Acto - Sprue cutters - A round file and a flat file - LOTS of nail files of various different grits - Pin vice
Like Brandon, I like using tape for mockups (although I'm trying to work more with pinning parts to hold stuff together more so everything goes together nicely) and also dollar store poster tack. It's great stuff - sticks pretty much anything together temporarily, and you can also use it like some people use Silly Putty for masking tricky-to-mask shapes.
I'd really like a Dremel or similar with a small enough chuck to hold micro drill bits to make things like wiring engines faster - if anyone has any recommendations I'd love to hear them!

Let's see, for me, the crucial tools are: Scalpel Razor saw & miter box Emery boards Jeweler's saw Pointy diamond file Dremel with drum sanding bit Six-inch steel rule Small rectangular block of aluminum (for squaring things) Divider (for transferring measurements) Pin vise and drill bits ...nothing too radical there Other stuff I use a lot: Epoxy putty (Aves) Casting supplies (silicone mold material, casting resin) When you need it, you need it: Tubing cutter Photoetching kit (MicroMark) Small lathe Large sanding drum in drill press
