Not just any magneto. It's the same type as ran on the Uncertain T. If you can't remember it, it has the coil mounted to the front. It's a little box shaped like a kindey bean. I need to know if it is metal. I have to make the coil and want to get it right. Thanks Hosted on Fotki

A magneto does not have a coil,it doesn't need one it generates its own spark. that doesn't look like a magneto in the picture. it looks like a regular gm distributer with a mechanical tach drive. i can't be certain, those pictures aren't too clear on my computer. but it looks like the distributer off an old corvette, which probably could be modified to work in a buick.

But a magneto DOES have a coil. Some have an internal coil, some have an external coil. The so called kidney bean mags (top three photos) although technically internal coils, have the coil mounted off the side in a housing instead of inside so it allows more room for extra windings on the mag (the more secondary windings the higher the voltage output). Other styles have a totally separate coil like a conventional distributer. The two bottom photos are of conventional internal coil mags. The main thing a mag is used for is the reliability of simple high volt circuitry and it does not require a battery to run the ignition.
