I'm trying to remove some gold plating from an old TD kit and hopefully save the chrome underneath. I've read in numerous places that placing the part in alcohol for a very short period of time does the trick, but I had a test piece in alcohol for over 5 minutes and nothing happened - anyone have an idea if the gold removal is possible ?

Was it 91% alcohol? You need the strongest percentage for it to work. Try it on some sprue first if possible!

I think I did that with Fantastic some years ago. One wipe was all it took.

Well I struck out on both ... The alcohol method took quite while, and it worked to a point but left some gold that wouldn't come off. I tried the acetone method last night, but only after a few seconds it took both the gold and chrome off ! I'm thinking this kit must have had some light plating done for the stuff to come completely off that fast. I guess its Alclad time , but thanks for the info guys !
