You could have had the Monster Garage cars for a steal today. the very first car they ever built on that show (the mower Mustang) only sold for 7300.oo the desiel trike thing sold for 26000.oo. Some of the other Monster Garage cars were just selling DIRT CHEAP the Monkeesmobile and Hillbillies truck will be going up on Friday or Saturday. They had to make a correction on the show today because they had first said that Mr. Barris designed the Monkees but recanted and said that Dean Jefferies did. It will be interesting to see what it sales for

Well, day one over, some nice cars, and decent prices. The Monkee mobile will be up for auction Saturday late afternoon, or early evening. Yep, the Monster Garage stuff was almost given away, oh well, maybe they should have sold it when it was a hot show.

That will be interesting, issue of rights to the name Monkees/Monkeemobile If the purchaser cannot afford to pay, will the name have to be changed, and the lettering removed??.
Interesting to see.

Rhino started reissueing vinyl lp's. With or without the logo on the door, it'll never be mistaken for the General Lee or Batmobile, thats for sure.

As far as the Monster Mower....I have seen that one in person during bike week here in Daytona several years ago when it was relatively new.....let's put it this way.....My concrete driveway has a smoother finish than that POS.....and the way the thing was hacked together....It's amazing it's still around. Whoever bought it....paid for the name....not the contents....Just my opinion....Stan

Man, I'd love to have that thing! The Monkeemobile was the first model my Dad and I ever built together when I was a wee lad...

The biggest problem that I have with George Barris is " there is no one else in the customizing business". The "Monkeemobile" was designed by Dean Jeffries regardless of what Mr. Barris claims. Installing a sound system is not designing a car. I have known Barris since 1961 and take "a grain of salt" with anything he says.
On the subject of the "Monster Garage" builds the aforementioned description of the "Lawn Mower" has to be correct. I really don't remember which product that I have seen from Jesse James ( and crew) but I do remember seeing a VERY ROUGH build that was posing as a WORK OF ART.
baCK TO mR. bARRIS: I do not want to take anything away from him. He has been responsible for many custom vehicles, but, no one should forget the likes of Joe Baillon, Gene Winfield, the Alexander bros. the late Ed Roth and also the late Bill Cushenberry.
I have met most of the "Big Name" builders and I would be hard pressed to pick out "NUMBER ONE" in talent or expertise.

Jesse James and the Monster garage folks are hacks! Jesse and his guys can build great bikes, but anything built on MG show has been hacked, sliced, and thrown together for the lowest dollar for a TV show scraficing quality and everything in between just for the sake of time and entertainment. Anyone that buys one of those cars for more than the build tally cost on the show is an idiot plain and simple. It ranks up there with getting one of the Pimp My Ride vehicles.

The whole point of the Monster Garage cars was that they WERE just thrown together in a week, and (most of the time) actually performed the task for which they had been modified. The only cars that even approached "finished" quality were the two customs, and even those really never saw real show car finsh levels.

They were thrown together in a week, did what they were "supposed" to do and then out they went. It made for an entertaining show. Here are the results from last night. Nothing too suprising except for maybe the Hot Dog dragster going for what it did. I am not commenting on the Barris things. Actually the point of the show was to see how wild they could build a weird vehicle in 7 days with a minimal budget, that any backyard customizer or builder could do. But after a while that 5K or whatever it was went to about 30k after donations and turned into a sponsorship show that NOBODY could match or build unless they were rich. The budget went right out the window and got plain insane. And the cars were STILL junk! But yeah, the cars were MEANT to be hack jobs and thrown together. Glad you guys could point that out. That being said, That is why I had to point out why they went so cheap that seems to shock others. It was OBVIOUS nobody wanted to bid high dollars and they pretty much gave them away. They were junk and not worth much more. Anyone that would pay much money for them is nuts! Nobody should be surprised by that.
I saw the Robosaurus last night. I wonder what that will go for. I think that will be on Sat if I remember.

That's the Ghetto Mobile, sorry if I sound mean, but the idiot who restored monkee mobile # added stuff that shouldn't have been on it, I remember seeing it a few years ago and the guy made a fuss about the "SOUND SYSTEM" he added,
first off if it is a restoration, wouldn't you want it to be as accurate as it was originally?
I do like the idea of the hood opening up normally and the addition of the shocks to the rear axle, but it didn't need a LCD tv on the dash or the ghettoriffic sound system,
I don't understand why the guy restored it to begin with, according to Barris, Barris restored it cosmetically in 98, because nothing was really wrong with it.
Car # 2 is the one that was in really sad shape, it worked for a while as a hotel taxi from what I hear, basically the car was shipped down somewhere when the monkees had a tour in the 80's? and it stayed there, a guy in NY owned it when it came back, it is the one that is painted red and yellow.

I had to work late so I missed that one but I have it on DVR and can go back and look. The Batmobile replica was a pretty high seller. The Monkeesmobile should bring at least 200K but we will see. Maybe more

The Monkee mobile has some bad blood going on it, Dean Jeffries originally wanted to buy it from Barris before Barris did the cosmetic work in the 90's on it, but barris decided to sell it to the Shmuck who restored it, so I guess the Feud between Jeffries and Barris will linger on,
that's just like the Black Beauty, similar circumstances,
I have talked to Jeffries from time to time, he is cool just as long as you don't mention Barris too much in a conversation
look at the revision for the Barrett Jackson auction, they had to mention Jeffries as the designer and such, but in the original listing they only mentioned Barris

Ya I seen that last night too, I really enjoyed the show as I do watch it sometime... I'm just floored at how much money people have to spend on an old car. but I can apreciate the ones with the right stuff..but even a car put together with diferent parts and is not origanal is still going for some serious coin...

Not to add gas to the fire, But in the last few years, I 've noticed that Mr. Barris has taken claim to a few other "RODS" as well....ie; Bob Reisner...Sand Dragon , Milk Truck , Pink Panther, Invader , Bathtub,& Outhouse.... Seems if I look up "Barris " ... Those cars were built by Barris !!!!! But I met Mr. Reisner around the 80's, with the Outhouse & Milk Truck near by, and they were totally built by him and his friend ( I can't think of his name at the moment...) Whats the story there Barris seems to be cashin in on "SOME" other rods that he really didn't have anything to do with in the first place ! my2centz..........

Yeah that "claims issue" has been going on with Barris for years. many claimed that is just the way it was in the past and why kick a dead horse or keep bringing it up since times have changed. Others say it isn't Barris making the claim it is his "people" that do it and he is just a "face". All of these are false and wrong no matter what. Barris himself has been making those claims, and is still doing it again to this day. He bought some of the cars from the movies "Fast and the Furious" and told me and a few of the guys with me at his shop to our face he was the one who made them all for the movie. I hate to say it, but he will never change. He knows damn well he didn't have ANYTHING to do with building those cars, is a grown man and knows better. There are no excuses for that no matter how cool people think he is or what he has done in the past. It doesn't make it right or ok to keep doing it JUST be cause he is George Barris. If he would let the past go as is I can accept that, but he continues to do it to this day so he gets no respect from me and many others for it. And to top it off, it is his own fault, nobody else working for him. Sure he built some great cars and WAS the self proclaimed king of customizing. But those days are gone and a new time is here. It is time to recognize the true people behind most of the builds he lays claim to.
That having been said, I cannot believe what that Batmobile knock-off went for. Amazing. I didn't catch who they said built it. Mark Towle maybe? Did the Monkee Mobile go yet?

I think this dead horse has been beaten way enough. It just starts ill feelings all over again here on the site.
I know George has laid claim to more than he's built, but that's showbiz, and George has always been on the "biz" side. Face it, that's where the money has always been, and he's one smart cookie when it comes to making money.
Another point which has been made before, is that although he didn't actually have a hand in construction, a crapload of these cars were built in his shop, and he bankrolled them. They wouldn't exist if it wasn't for his facilities and cashola.
It sat wrong with me for years that he never gave Tom Daniel any credit for his design work until the last few years, and Tom still can't stand him. I met George and Shirley about 10 years ago, and they were both just as nice as could be. He was totally stoked at my model building, and the fact that I brought some vintage magazines and boxes for him to sign. We talked a long time, and took a lot of pictures with him and my son and I. I'm not saying it's right to take credit for naught, but that's part of big business I guess. He is still doing a lot to promote the car and toy hobby, and is never at a loss for enthusiasm. Ask Eldon. He's been hangin' with him, and he's diggin' him.

Here are Saturdays results. I am staying out of the whole Barris thing because things like he does goes on all over the place. (I know from working in radio) Sure it makes him a little but I am still going to be a fan and leave it at that. Would you just drop it ;D The Monkeesmobile sold for about 150000 more than I figured but good for it. The General Lee was just stuipd because a friend of mine has number 3 of 4 of the same car and drives it a lot duing the summer. The bondo is starting to come off so he is trailering it more these days ;D Robosaurs sold for less that I figured but still good money. The steal of the day was the custom RV. Someone kit bash that thing. Plus I liked the 32 Ford bus and see a kit bash coming LOL!!! www.barrett-jackson.com/application/search/carlist.aspx?&In_Day=Saturday
