OK - I have an Uncertain T base that I have been prepping. I can not decide what color to paint it. The sign plaque is gloss black and the letters are candy orange. I have cut outs for mirrors. The scansions are polished aluminum. The car is candy orange with a large semi flat black roof. It will be titled at an angle. I tried covering it with brushed aluminum Bare Metal Foil. Ugly. Nolan Suggested heavy metal flake - Maybe too much bling? Nani is suggesting flat black to keep the attention on the car - I am afraid the roof has so much black area that the car may get lost. Any ideas? Gloss black? Hosted on FotkiHosted on FotkiOh...Timbo....Spy photo. Flounder.

Heavy Flake of course. There is a difference in "gaudy bling" and flake. Flake is old school and fits your theme really nice. BTW- Great job on that.

Scott, how about a dark gray base, with the stanchion bases gloss black to match the Uncertain C name plate, You can always use some thin chrome mylar as a mirror under the car. If there is enough room under the car, check out the local glass shop for a small piece of 1/8 mirror. BTW, your U-C is awesome!!! How about some good pics sometime??!!

black & white checkerboard, with white "?" marks in the black squares, and black "?" marks in the white squares. make all of the "?" marks tilted off center, with the tops of them leaning to the right just a tad. the tilted "?" marks will tie in with the tilted roof, and the "?" marks will add the "what is it" feel. by the way, if there are pics of the car here, i can't see them right now due to the web blocker at work.

If you want the car to jump go with a contrasting color. . . and I like the metal flake idea! ! ! ! set it off. . . I would go darker grass green!

for a one of kind base make a pattern - take a piece of .030 polished stainless have the holes punched then have it polished ..

I was thinking the same thing. Look at Dave Young's build in the gallery

White like they use in indoor shows.... makes the car pop. Will look good with the silver posts.

How about some "fun fur" in white, like the old angel hair thing from the 50's-60's? Might be kind of kool! (or might look like complete dogsh*t.......)
Geez, so you dropped a spy photo on the streamliner. Corvette is a good choice, but I like mine a bit bigger and heavier.....(I'll make a special post....... ;D)

I can give you two ideas that are basically the same but with different results.
#1 Use a mirror as a base ( free-hand shape, if possible ). prep it the same way that you did the body but not over the whole mirror. The area painted should be only slightly larger than the model itself. OR
#2 Paint the whole base the same way that you painted the body only this time over spray the color with a white pearl.
NOW here is the coup de grau: Lite up ( with a match ) a piece of styrene sprue, outside, of course. The burning sprue will give off the blackest, sootiest smoke that you have ever seen. Pass the base through the smoke and you will have a streak pattern. If the pattern looks good, spray it with clear. If the pattern is not satisfactory, simply wipe it off and "smoke it " again.
For the rrest of your builders, this method makes for a wild paint job when combined with panel painting or as a two-tone job.

we used to do that smoke treatment with an oxy-acetyline torch. the coolest thing is that if you don't like it, the smoke can be wiped off. it takes a little practice to get it right, but when you do get it right, it looks awesome.

I kinda like Rob's idea of the checker-board pattern, but instead of black and white..........how about red and white. Monocoat self adhesive covering for R/C airplanes would be quick and easy and would off set the colors of the car.
How about the chrome (mirror finish ) self adhesive mylar. would eliminate the need for a mirror as the bottom of the car would reflect in the mylar?......just throwing my 2 cents in. ;D

Well, to make the orange really pop, a blue base would be the ticket, but perhaps that's a little TOO much. I like the idea of a gray base - how about shooting a medium gray basecoat and misting lighter and darker shades over it to get a granite-like effect?

Well Gents, Once again this site rocks. The mirror is going to win out.
Primary reason - Nani picked it and she did the leg work to find where can get some plasctic mirror material. We are headed there today.
Thanks for all the input. I like that smoke idea. Gonna keep that one for later.
I promise I will post pics once this is wrapped up. I really want to submit it to the guest gallery.

Hey Flounder Here's a real rough idea. Paint the base pearl white. Using the cars color red, fog the edges. Then highlight the edge in black. It's just an Idea.
