Hot rodding lost a great guy today, regardless of what anyone thinks about his builds and how he was portrayed on AHR.
RIP Boyd
PS: A Boyd tribute group build would be a cool tribute I think?

Well, it's sad to hear. I know some didn't care for Boyd, but he should still be remembered for the way he came in, and changed the world of Hot rodding, and he was quite an innovator, and machinist!! RIP Boyd!!!

Another sad day in car land Boyd was one of the early makers of custom billet aluminum wheels and made people realize what could be done. In 1990, we got a telephone call from a guy in Ontario, Canada who wanted to put his new hot rod in our show but didn't have any photos. He said he just picked it up from being finished at Boyd's shop. We accepted it over the 'phone and made space and we were not disappointed, the car was stunning! That is what made Boyd I think, his early builds. Boyd was to have been our feature guest at our car show in Toronto in 2 weeks. I just finished a Smoothster as a surprise gift for the show manager; the Chezoom is drying and the Hauler is next. I guess a tribute is in order, maybe over the weekend.

He (and Li'l Johh Buttera) literally changed the face of hot rodding... pioneered whittling hot rod parts out of chunks of aluminum, making custom wheels, and taking hot rodding to Wall Street. It sucks when anybody dies.

Even though we were worlds away in the way we build cars I still had a lot of respect for the man. Boyd was the innovator in design of billet. He also had a big hand in the commercialization of after market parts for street rods, not to mention the TV shows promoting the sport of building. He put himself out there to criticized by everyone. He will be missed!

MAN! I've got an idea for a BOYD buildoff! We all build a car "Coddington style" in honour! then to make it official, we all put my name on every build! Yeah, Yeah...I'm a dork...but look at it this way...when I die, y'all might think I'm some kinda f**king hero aswell! Popularizing hotrodding was never what it was about for me...that's like what the beach boys did for surf music...they made it big...but changed every aspect of it...I've never seen a Boyd Coddington (HOT ROD)...just lame arse customs (with a C) I reserve the K's for builders that deserve it! he bastardised the car world, and it's lingo. a true hotrod is built in a garage, carport, or driveway...not in a shop. the man lost his touch 20 years ago...... R.I.P Boyd.

Well, ya' hate to see any car guy kick off. That show of his used to just pee me off to no end, and I often wondered why someone would buy a 100k hotrod from there after seeing the cluster f*** that went on there on TV!! LOL. He did do a whole lot for the hotrod world in innovation and design. His custom wheels have always been top notch. He just always seemed to be bad at management. A lot of the local doctors I know are the same way, great doctor, but no sense with money or business at all. It's rare to find both, and I guess it carries over into many fields. As much as a "garage guy" as I am, I love a nice set of killer billet wheels with a matching steering wheel! Sorry, just do. I liked many of his early cars too. It just became a big business, and a high-profile one too. May he cruise in a gleaming roadster on the highway to wherever he ends up! He can hang with Roth and Cushenberry now!

I've been wondering: what will happen to Boyd Coddington, the business? Who's gonna run that now? Chris Coddington? Jo? Dwayne? Be interested to see how that pans out...

i tend to agree with whitewall on this. i have seen a few of "boyds" cars up close, and some of them are pretty on the outside, but turds underneath. the whole billet wheel, smoothie look never did anything for me...and those are not hot rods. he made himself look like an ass on his t.v. show, and he ruined alot of nice cars in my opinion.

I don't know if I'm at liberty to say how I know this, so I won't, BUT it does appear that they intend to continue doing business - at least for the time being.

I worked for him in the early 90s. When I went to the interview in his office, he had all kinds of restored toys, peddle cars, and the guitar he made for Van Halen or ZZ Top. I didnt stay long cause I wanted to work in the Hot Rod Shop, but he put me in the Wheel shop. I alway wish I would have stayed, but oh well.

Boyd had taken Ill just after the holidays and had been in and out of the hospital. He had an operation and was said to be doing fine, then back in the hospital again. Nothing has been said as to what he had wrong or go wrong just yet.
RIP Boyd.
