Am I the only one who did not know that Hot Rods by Boyd is no longer?
Went to Mooneyes Bar-B-Q with Zoot and he took me by the closed Boyd's shop on the way home. Pretty sad stuff. I thought it would endure. I also never got to check it out.
We swung by So Cal too and saw the back of Mister Shine even though the shop was closed.
Makes me want to put together a So Cal shop tour - Three or Four shops in one day. We could end up at the NHRA museum...better than the Peterson....in my mind.

Nope, you're not the last to know. That would be me. I wonder if they finished up all the projects or just closed the doors. It hasn't really been that long since he passed, so I'd have to wonder the fate of any cars that were only half finished went he died... The Hot Wheels Twinnmill was mid-project when it was "spirited" away in the dark of night, years ago when Boyd went bankrupt, to save it from an unknown fate.

The Twinmill was taken from Boyds shop during the day. Trust me, I watched it being taken away and brought back to Mattel.
I wasn't aware Boyds shop was closed though, I would have thought it would have stayed open for a little while at least.

boydforum.repspark.com/ShowThread.aspx?ID=3233Didn't this happen in the past?. when Boyd declared bancruptcy, didn't they hand over Boyds wheels to somebody else? Nice to see that both companies will continue in some form or other, in many different workshops. Col.

" The Twinmill was taken from Boyds shop during the day. Trust me, I watched it being taken away and brought back to Mattel. Well thanks for clearing that up Chris, I guss I can chalk what I'd heard to a Hot Rodding urban myth at this point.

Yeah, it got handed to his son maybe? But didn't they just sell off the wheel shop a couple years ago? Now Jo is running it again? How did that work? But truth be told, Jo probably couldn't run the HotRod shop since nobody liked her ( just speculation, I know nobody liked her but not sure if that was the reason she couldn't run it)), and Dwayne isn't there anymore because NOBODY liked him. It was because of Boyd that he was still there.
Myturk, hope I didn't offend by posting that. It was just one of a few memorial moments with my job. After hearing of the impending doom heading Boyds way, with the bankruptcy coming in fast, all the assets were going to be tied up in court and the Twinmill was one of them. So a flatbed was scrambled up in a matter of miuntes on a weekend and the car was taken out and back to Mattel to sit for a while unbuilt until a deal and a plan was made to have it completed.

Not at all Chris, I had also heard it was over a weekend too, just at night. Thanks for clearing that up!

Definitely sad to see another hot rodding legend go, along with his shop. Like or hate the guy, he was an icon and an innovator, not to mention a stepping stone for people like Foose. Did make nice shinny bits and the craftsmanship was topps.
Now, what happened to the TwinMill? Did it ever get built? Was it the first one or the Twinmill II? I know #1 was built a while back is that the one? The driver said he couldn't see anything with that blower sitting in front of him...

Wow..! See what you started Flounder..? I told you that they didn't close down that long ago.
OK, here's my 2 cents about ALL this; The Twin Mill IS in the hands of Mattel & has been for awhile now.
Boyds X-wife (Dianne) owns part of the wheel shop, which at last notice was located with in MHT (same place Foose uses to cut wheels). The weird part is that son Chris, upon Boyds death, inherited part of the wheel company. So both Chris & Dianne have that... Jo Ann has little to do with that in spite of the post you've read. She gets the house & whatever liquid assets may linger, that's about it.
Long time employee Dan Sobieski, is working on what's left of Boyds projects. We even saw him last Sat. in the back of the shop & he has a few cars under his care. Dan's a hotrod hardcore with skills so I think they'll be fine there...
I'm not familiar with Abe Rodriguez so I know nothing there, sorry.Hizoot

Flounder, I will agree with you wholeheartedly, the NHRA museum is indeed superior to Peterson's. If you do set up a shop tour weekend for SoCal let us know here on the "Corner". You might check with Mr. Foose we did a tour of his shop the last time we were in the area, the guy is a kick in the backside. I know there was no Love lost between the Coddingtons and Chip, it's unfortunate because they built some outstanding cars together.

Which driver was that? Anyway, the Twinmill you are thinking of that did get built is actually the one you are thinking of. A deal was made to get it finished up and compensation was made. Mattel only released control for 2 years for touring and promotion and then got it back. It has since been repainted with PPGs HotWheels Spectraflame paint in Anti-freeze green.
As far as Boyd and Chip, his has nothing but respect for the man. He won't say a bad thing about him. WHat happened in the past was the past.

I cannot comment for certain on too many of the other things.. always speculation of course.
But I know about everything you could expect to know about the Twinmill. (I work in the diecast toy car industry with a few "certain" companies.) And have for a while. But you are correct, there was only that one twinmill ever made. Chip Doesn't have it and never did. It is still owned by Mattel as it always had been from day one. It wasn't passed around too much either. It was started at Boyds shop due to a friendship by a certain mattel employee being close friends with Chip while Chip was Pres of Hot Rods by Boyd. Once the bankruptcy came down it was pulled out before it ended up being in a legal battle in the courts as to who actually owned it. It sat at Mattel for quite a while until that same Mattel employee came up with the plan to have it completed in time for the 35th anniv. of Hot Wheels. A company took the challenge and footed the bill for the build. And in return got to tour it around for promotion for 2 years. Also as part of the deal, 64th scale twinmills in special packaging were made in 3 colors to be sold at the events to help recoup some cost. The new paint was applied when PPG and Mattel made a join venture to produce the Spectraflame paints that were popular on all the "redline" era Hotwheels from 1968-1972. They have since remade many of these colors for their new club cars. The car was sprayed in the Antifreeze green for the SEMA show and along with that, the new "68's" Hotwheels KMC wheels were added. Now as much as many people say the new color looks like "poop", it is a very popular color within the HotWheels community that the car was built to appeal too. So as with any color, beauty is always in the eye of the beholder.

I like it better in Antifreeze, plus it matchs my 1/25th scale version better!

I don't care how much you guys do or don't know about it or where it is or who it belongs to. I like hot wheels & I was glad to see it at SEMA. BTW Chip Foose was standing around talking about it. I don't know if this means he did or didn't work on it & don't care.
I know Hizoot works not too far from Boyds & has been there several times with those guys. And I don't know what that means either. Maybe he does have too much free time-

Finally a pic gets posted....and man is that a neat lookin' vee-hicle! I can see how it would be a real bi_ch to drive, though, with the motor directly in line with the driver's vision. Another thing that comes to mind, or takes me back, is how unique and shiiiiiiny the paint is. If those guys weren't in the background, it could pass as a close-up of an actual Hotwheels car.

I don't think Justin is tring to defend me (at least I hope not) looks like he's venting about hot wheels. Sounds like he's a big fan of them & why not..? Who doesn't like a car with TWO HUGE ENGINES in it, no matter what color or size it is..?
I'm outta here for now, good luck guys & play nice..!Hizoot
