I wonder if the name of that car is "The Plagerizor"... Pretty sure the tires are of a Dave Deal design...

Somehow I`m really fed up with Barris stealing credit from other builders. I think he has enough cool rides under his belt without doing this. Quess you all know that Silhouette was made by Bill Cushenbery. It`s really strange that even the latest Monkeemobile issue by AMT was ( mistakenly ? ) titeled as a Barris creation..Dean Jefferies must have been very happy with that one...

In all fairness, the late '60s and '70s were not friendly times for intellectual property. There are plagarized designs by the dozens, if not hundreds, that were produced by Zee and Zylmex. My suspicion is that either Zee didn't consult Barris at all, or that Barris signed on as "creator" of the range, drew a royaly for the use of his likeness, and the designers in Hong Kong did whatever they wanted to.
Just a guess.

I agree. This thread should be titled "Grippers" designed by George Barris. ZEE just decided to put the fugly wheels on their stolen design Silhouette. I personally have respect for ALL the giants and if the media cant get it right, at least we the admirers will know the facts. I recall awhile back right here in a shop in OXFORD CONNECTICUT a Riv that Barris had done for some movie was in there for a repaint back to the original. It still had the old phone in it! I was thrilled to see it and had the book signed by G.B. himself. (wish I had it today...) But my point is even though that shop was re-doing the paint it still was His car right?

When I "moved one" this morning, it got something out of my system. ;D I view George Barris as the Milli Vanilli of customs. I still like "Blame It On The Rain" even though they neither wrote or recorded it, and a Barris crest won't keep me from liking a custom originally built by Jeffries or the Alexander Brothers. He's done a lot to keep "Kustom" cars in the public consciousness, even if it was only a by-product of his own self-promotion.

Well Barrisfan. Sorry if I offended you or Barris as a " rookie". I`ve been a Barris fan for a long time (20 + years). There can`t be better showrods after Batmobile or Munster Coach. Of course there might be many manufacturers around the world who can steal design or Barris-name without any permit. My goal was to mention that the credit should go to original builder . That`s it.

Barris was involved as part of the TV show The Monkees, more recently BarrisFilms filmed the process of 'Restoration' on the Monkeemobile. I suspect many people worked on building it originally, It was built very quickly, The upholstery was done by someone who worked for the Barris Shop, so connected that way. Many names have been 'forgotten' the people who designed vehicles. Different people purchased the vehicles and may have done some minor work (repaint Etc). and put their name on them Pink Panther Mobile designed by Joe Bailon, during busy periods worked on by many different workshops. Purchased in recent years for display in museums/as plastic model kits. Different names attributed to it over the years. I shall get off my soap box now. Col. Colin.

Man, this dead horse has been beaten so many times it's dust by now! Stop while this thread is going bad already........
George is without a doubt a Ringmaster. He's the guy there to promote and get the crowd going. He also had the shop, the help, and the money to get most of these projects off the ground in the first place, even if they weren't his own design. Get over it. And as someone else already said, he's done a lot to keep the custom car world from completely fizzling out, and at 86 yrs. old, leave him alone for God's sake. LOL.

Again, I am sorry for getting fussy but he will not be around forever and those that have been "bashing" him, will be jumping on that bandwagon as soon as he is gone. Enjoy the stuff he is bringing back to life while he can. I am done now

Thank you, too, Timmy! Mr. Barris is one of the best in the business! ! admire him and his workmanship! He is one of the original Kustom Kar Kreators, a helluva promoter, and, yes, a ringmaster. He has put his name to many things, both to his own work and the work of others; but he has had a hand, in some way, in many a tv/movie/custom car over the years that were not his work directly and alot of that involvement is not 'public knowledge'. Everybody wants 'credit where credit is due.' Doesn't always work that way. This is just how 'show business', in it's MANY forms, works unfortunately.

And if anybody's got a right to be defensive, it's Mark. (Barrisfan) The only other person probably tighter with George of late was Eldon. I didn't think of my defense on my own, in fact, I used to feel very stronger the same as many of you. Eldon defended him to the end too, so that's good enough for me.
