Great photo's Jerry!!! Glad to see the Lil Coffin make it back, but it just doesn't look quite right for some reason.....the missing headlights?, wrong wheels? (I know getting the correct 5 spokes wouldn't have been that hard) I don't care for the painted carbs either. In my opinion, if your going to restore a famous showcar like this, do it 100% correct, not 94%. It does have a great stance!!!

the front wide whites are just a wee bit too wide.
Is that El Matador lurking in the back?

Hey now! It's great to see the old girl back. It may not be a spitten image of her glory days, but I'll take this look any day. The car was always changing throughout its history . I don't like the front tire. Something about the whitewall. It looks like it was painted on, and the tire is a bit smaller than the old version. The gold carbs are a bit to eye grabbing, and take away from the whole car. I think a red gold, rather than a yellow gold might have worked better. but hey, who am I ? Welcome back baby. Thanks Mr. Starbird. Great work. Hope to see it in California some day.

What's the story on the other beauties in these great shots? I recognize some of Elden's creations but what about that purple sculpture behind the Coffin? Awesome I think maybe the back whitewalls on the Coffin should have been wider to match the front... but trust me I'd be nit picking. Gerry G

Looks good, There will always be certain purists who say its not correct. The recent refurbishment of many older showrods. (Monkeemobile, one of the Munster Koaches are good examples) It can always be changed. Look what has been done to poor LiL Coffin over the years. Top chopped off completely, then changed. into another rod/van~thingy It is new paint and parts, give them time to gain that certain patina aged parts get. At least it is out and about and not stuck inside. Better having them used and looked after than rotting away in a museum. or god forbid broken up. Carbs can always be re-painted a different colour, wheels changed. (it is following the new ideas for big and littles low profile tyres on front helps to lower the front) its how modern wheels and tyres are, at least it didn't get Budnic rims fitted, they are pretty good replicas, made of modern materials to latest specs, safety Etc. Give em a break. Don't know if the roof chop can be undone/corrected. Always has had a cantilevered roof. the model seems to be lower/more raked. ---------- It looks like El Matador by its side, love the CCab as well. Nice to see Eldon Titus rods have found a good home. Voodoo Spider and the purple rod behind the coffin is the Vampyre. see here for pics of his other creations, in his memory. www.hotrodhotline.com/pr/2008/08eldentitus/If you look you will see a pic of the Voodoo Spider next to the LiL Coffin Clone, which seems to be built closer to the original. Is this why changes were made perhaps??. www.hotrodhotline.com/pr/2008/08eldentitus/html/08eldentitus_86.html

i like it, but..i don't care for the front OR the rear tires. the fronts look too small in diameter, and the rears look too big in diameter. the rake is too high in the back, but that may be due to new, tight suspension components. I also don't care for the torque thrust "d" rims...i like the original standard torque thrusts that were on it. don't get me wrong it looks killer, and i understand how the car has evolved over time...i just think that everyone is used to the way it looked when it was first done as the lil coffin, and these "new" things that are on it kind of change the look a little bit. not that change is a bad thing, but i just think that everyone was expecting it to look like it did way back when.

I personally like to see this kustom in any of its incarnations, it shows Mr Starbird still is doin his thang!! His eye and designs continue to update. Maybe someday He will "backdate" a coffin for the purists, but for now I take this one! These days a real kool kustom is still a real kool kustom! Just my opinion, sorry

I AM a die-hard purist and this is close enough for me. I can't understand how or why ANYONE would have subjected the L'il Coffin to what they did and I am THRILLED that it's back to this incarnation, I mean look at it the design couldn't be any better.....there is STILL one thing very wrong with it though......my name isn't on the title. ;D

I thought the carb color was a bit funky too, but considering what this poor car has gone through in its lifetime ,I could live with that. Darrryl is no kid anymore , to me, what he has done is incredible . Maybe the roof slant is as close as he could get, or as he remembered it. I'm just glad its back !

I'll take it anytime if he wants to throw it away! LOL. Hell, are you kidding me? It looks great considering what it's been through. LOT's of those early showcars got "recycled" into something else back in the 70's after they had run they're course on the showcar circuits. Many fell into total disrepair and destruction, so it's good to see many of these cars making a comeback today. I think your seeing so many of them surface because lot's of the kids who loved them 40 yrs. ago have grown up, made a shitpot full of money, and are buying up the things they love from they're childhood! Fortunately, some of them have done extremely well for themselves, and have saved more than they're share! (Moriarity and Shulton for example-thanks guys!) What a triumph for showrodders like us! Raise your brewskies high and thank the Chrome God! The other thing you need to remember, is not everything is still available 50 yrs. later. Take a look at these shots of the car, even in the early years, it had different tires and rims on it several times. I love the early unchopped version too! Comparing these shots from the side, I think it looks remarkably well. Or do some of you still like this version better? If so, you need thrashed a bit yourself...... ;D

i agree the front whites might be a little wide and that "yellow"gold on the carbs a little bright, but if you check some of the early photos it did have gold carbs at one point and it did have the gray cast wheels !! either way ,like alot of you guys have mentioned, its been through alot of changes in its life and i have to say it still looks way cool im in springfield missouri and we have a local fabricator named ron englert who did a real nice version for a local gentleman named the lil coffin 2, ive got some pics somewhere, ill try to dig them out and post them for you guys...

You know what is throwing alot of it off?? Look at the white insert in the roof. the padding is to thick. this may settle in time. At least it is back to as close to the Monogram version as it can be. Cannot wait to see it next week!!!
