I don't know if you guys are interested, I know it isn't a showrod, but do you want to watch me build the Polar Lights Jupiter 2? I'm also starting the Chariot. I figure we could critique the kit and you guys can tell me what I'm doing wrong all at once! If it's too off-topic, I'll kill the thread....I know a lot of you guys frequent the Hobbytalk site and like sci-fi, figures and all that. Just asking...

OK, I'll do it then! I haven't done a build post in a long time, but it's always fun to share (THIS is why I love my dear old friend Dave Mikrut aka Sooperdave's posts!) Now, I will tell you, I'm no expert on these things, so it won't be an "exact" replica of the shows ship, but it will be done to the best of my abilities! That said, there's no pics yet because I just started it Brandon! LOL! I think I'll enjoy posting it here because the work by the sci-fi guys on the Hobbytalk site are so over-the-top they would laugh at me! (not that you guys won't as well, but that's OK, your my friends..... ;D) I will shoot photographs tonight of the very start of what I have done, and we will go from there! Thanks guys! I figured you might be interested in this. I think a lot of us grew up with Lost in Space, and for thier time, the vehicles are damned kool! To infinity, and beyond! Wait, that's Buzz Lightyear, wrong show..... Oh, and Eddie, I dropped the small Seaview on the garage floor and busted it to pieces, so back to square one on that one! It's on the shelf for a bit I'm afraid....Sorry buddy!

I'd love to see it as well ... just picked up the Moebius Flying Sub and wow ... for once a model box doesn't lie about the size of the model inside! Isn't Moebius coming out with a new Jupiter 2 kit as well? Those Irwin Allen shows had the best props and ships ... that's why I watched them all as a kid! One of the guys in a model club I belong to here will be doing a demo on how to light these kits ... after looking over some of those lighting kits (like from Voodoo), I'm afraid of doing something wrong and either getting electrocuted or melting the model to a puddle of plastic!

Don't let the electronics scare you off. It's easy, even the Voodoofx kits are once you sit and read the directions and follow them. I used the kit on my Seaview plus expanded the amount of LED's I used and it works fantastic! I sprung for the core lighting system from Strange Stuff Studios for this J2 as well as my Pod. It's amazing! I went to school with Simon Mercs, the owner, and his models are just incredible. He has never NOT been a sci-fi guy! I found his signature in my Class of 79' yearbook, and it had a monster with space ships flying around it! LOL. I'm also adding more lighting for the computers and such, but I'll get to that as I build along. Here's a link to Simon's stuff: www.strangestuffstudio.com/

I am sooo diggin this stuff! Those reference sites are really too kool! When I was growin up, not only was there Hot Rods and all the wacky customizers and car shows goin on, the wild surfer cult, Cartoons, Hot Rod Cartoons and Drag Cartoons, and at the same time all these new imagination inspiring science fiction shows on TV! Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, The Munsters, Addams Family and my two persnal favorites...Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and Lost in Space! Both of those shows actually started out taking themselves very seriously! Later, they became more child oriented and kinda making fun of themselves. I don't know how many times they both used the same monsters at different sizes to save money and pretty much the same story line. So much imagination and creativity. Some of my all time favorite sci-fi movies are from the 50's and 60's. What a great time it was growing up in that era. Thanks Finkerstein! This stuff is very enjoyable to look at... at you do it so well!

OK, lets start with the basics. Here's the Polar Lights kit. It's hard to believe I've had this kit in my possesion for 11 years! The prices on ebay have really gone up too! Most seem to go between 75-100 bucks! This builds up into a 12" diameter version. It comes with a very small basic lower level assembly which I won't be using, and a complete upper floor assembly with all the goodies like suspended animation tubes, computer panels, etc. This is one of the bigger errors in the floor plan, the pilot chairs, which I have already ground off and have started filling the holes. They look like unfunctional park benches! I'll be making mine from sheet plastic and half round later on. The computer panels themselves are a bit too low, but thats the breaks. These a backlit panels for all of the computer panels, etc. They are printed on translucent mylar and are offered by "Outer Space Outfitters". I picked these up off ebay. You must remove the molded areas and glue these over the opening, then you can backlight them with LED's. This should prove to be some tedious work over the next few weeks. They come with some nice clear instructions on placement. I've also purchased these decal sheets from LSDS. They are really nicely done on heavy paper, and include just about everything you can imagine and some extras as well! The instruction sheet is really informative! This was my first project, the landing gear. Unfortunately, they are molded in 2 pieces right up the middle, making for the worst possible seam you can imagine! I used sheet plastic to make step fronts as well as new tops for each stair. It isn't perfect, but it looks better than it did! Landing gear fixed, I primed the main hull components and them and then airbrushed them with Orion silver microflake paint. I had practiced on some parts with rattle can silver from Tamiya, and they were just lifeless. I took some artistic license with my favorite HOK basecoat, then cleared it with just the tiniest smidgeon of micro-micro rainbow flake to give it a translucent affect. I got a sag on the middle hull area, right by the danged window, so off it will go and get repainted. Sand sand sand....the story of my life.... Here's the expensive enchilada, the core light system from Strange Stuff Studios. It works so well though, I love it. You have to cut a large hole in the bottom pan to sandwich it between it and the core housing. The core housing is a bear to mask off too. It took me well over an hour! There is a gap between the core housing and the bottom, not much, but it's there and I wasn't overly happy about it. I made a small battery box to house the 9V in, then glued the core to the hull pan. It is operated by a magneticly activated switch in the wiring harness. You simply wave a magnet past it, and on it goes! Very kool design. Here's a short video of it operating, with me giving a brief narration. More as it all progresses!

Looking good Tim. ;D Do the decals from LSDS go on over the details, or do you have to sand them off? I have the Moebius Space Pod and Chariot kits and was thinking about buying some of these decals, but wasn't sure if they would work over the molded detail.

I was never really interested in this kit at all, nor did I watch the show. But seeing the detail with it all and how you got the lights makes me want one. Liek others, I will be chekcing out the progress of this build for sure. AWESOME!!!!

Planemc, the decals go over the panels, but you do have to sand off any totally raised areas like knobs, but not too much. They seem to be pretty thick too. We'll see how they work once I get all the walls in paint! Hang around.....

OK, did a bit of work on this today. I am cutting out all of the areas that will have the translucent panels for lighting. First I hogged them out with the mototool as much as possible, then went back with a hand file and X-actoknife and squared them up as much as possible. (after these photos were shot) Tedious, but not too bad....You have to leave just a bit of the edge of the old molded details for the mylar part to sit on top of. I will mount them with watch crystal cement once the panels are all painted. You can get this cement from MicroMark Small Tools. It's called Krystal Klear. I use it on all my photoreduced guages and such. It dries perfectly clear, and is almost like silicone when dry. It comes in a micro-tipped applicator. (Yes, I'm missing a huge chunk of knuckle....I installed a new attic fan on my roof this morning and the sheet metal got me!) I got the floor filled completely in and smoothed, ready for the new seats when I get them made. Tonight I started painting all of the walls and floors with Tamiya Desert Sand. Yes, I'm using a rattle can...Write this date down! I like how they spray, nice fan. I won't bore you with photos of that. Assembly starts soon, and then lots of decal hangin'!
