Here's another one that blew my mind. I originally saw this in the second SAE I bought. It is Chuck Larsen's Lil Pink Truck. I made my maiden voyage to GSL this year and there it was on the table looking as bad a## as it did 15 years ago. And there was Chuck too! (Love those GSL name tags!) Turns out Chuck is a real nice guy and gladly showed me everything about the model. Here are some of the key features - done in 1988! Custom body Opening doors with operating spring latches. Open, in scale louvers punched into aluminum. Scratch built chassis. Scratchbuilt functional front and rear suspension with working 1/2 shafts. Scratchbulit V16 blown double overhead cam small block. This and a couple other models are what got me fixated on flashy designs with outrageous powerplants and lots of detail. Enjoy the pics. Awesome... I can totally see that inspiration in your own build style. Neat that you got a chance to talk to him, too.

Wow, thanks Scott! I was just thinking about Chuck and this build the other day. I had the pleasure of meeting Chuck at a show in Chicago in, I'm thinking 89 or 90, and he had this and several other incredable models on display. Nice to know he's still around too. I'm pretty sure this won the first Hot Rod Magazine Model contest also.

I'm pretty sure this won the first Hot Rod Magazine Model contest also. Man... what year was that?? I had a subscription and remember trying to build a chopped AMT '57 Chevy for that. I messed it up in only the way a 12 or 13 year old could.... but I had a blast buying all the Hot Rod series kits when they were coming out and getting the cool Hot Rod sticker.

I knew you would like those pics, Mike. Remind me of some other builds I have pictures of. . Chuck brought the truck and the TR7 puller (working throttle linkage and suspension!) Ahh yes the Hot Rod contests. I have those issues. The first one was won by a So Cal guy with a pretty wild 1/16 scale twin engine turbo top fuel dragster. Many of the entries had poor photography. There was another builder in the first one that I have been asking about - Terry Ross of England. Killer designs. I'll have to use my mags to scan what I have of his for my favorites album because he disappeared. I heard there were some issues with how the first one was judged so they cleaned it up for the second contest. And the second one was a killer! The second Hot Rod contest was the really good one. It was was won by Chuck's Porvette. His pink truck also placed. Come to think of it, that was where I saw the pink truck first. I ordered a back issue of SAE with the color coverage. It's a shame those contests are gone. I have to believe they really brought a lot of old builders back to the hobby and captured some new ones too. I think it even spawned the Street Rodder columns for a while. I hate to wax on about "The Hobby", but that mainstream coverage does a lot for the future of it. Wax on - wax off. Flounder

Brandon - I entered this in the second one. 1985 or 1986. No returns. It did eventually make it into the TUBS issue of SAE. Flounder Hosted on Fotki

Never seen that pink one,
But it loks like an 80's model not that it's a bad thing..! "Flashy designs with outrageous powerplants & lots of detail." Wow..! Glad we don't do anything like that around here someone might get in trouble..!Hizoot
