El was a good person with a big heart and great friend. I never knew him to know a stranger, he would always take time for others.
I'll miss many things about him, but one that comes to mind is the funny little grin on his face with that laugh. El seemed to always know what was kooL, and if people didn't understand what his definition of kooL was, well, he'd give them that funny grin and smile, then laugh.
He had a knack for making others feel important, even though in the end he ended up being the famous one. He taught me an incredible amount about friendship, loyalty and Kustomizing cars. I will always be grateful to him.
I remember when he spent over 100 hours teaching me how to chop the top on my first 1950 Mercury. We called the car SwitchBlade! After spending all that time, he never asked for anything, he just wanted to share and teach. When we were finished chopping the Mercury, we painted the dash the old fashion way, with layers and layers of kustom colors and fades. He wanted to show me the craft that Darryl Starbird had shown him when he was younger. El wanted the old style methods of creating kustom cars to live on.
El was always upbeat and positive throughout his recent pain. A loyal friend and very humble. He never gave up on life and he has taught a lot of us to chase our dreams. El is a Hero of mine and he will be dearly missed.
